Despite being a smaller player in this sector with big-brand global engineering firms as their competitors, our client's nimble approach continues to mean their products are in most cases the highest-performing products that exist in their sector. The company is currently experiencing rapid growth, investing heavily in internal product development, and aiming to continue to revolutionize the sectors in which they operate (power generation, automotive, aerospace. defence, and manufacturing).

Info about what the role entails

Externally facing product development role. Leading an engineering department of just shy of 30 engineers (with direct team lead reports in each discipline) the Product Development Manager will be responsible for the engineering output of this world-leading engineering & manufacturing business. It's a customer-facing role as a lot of the requirements for product development come from in-depth conversations with customers.

In this role you will get a good understanding of why customers buy their projects, gather new requirements and from this continue to develop the best / highest performing products available on the market.

A typical working day will be 50% of the time on System Architecture / System Design - talking to customers and sales, architecting what their products need to be and need to do.

25% will be line management with team leaders as direct reports and 25% Project / Programme management - ensuring engineering are on task with the product innovation (validation).

Essential Requirements of the Product Development Manager

• Experienced in a Senior Product Development role managing the development of Software / embedded & electronics products - You will not need to be an SME but you will need to contribute technically and add value to the product lines.
• Systems engineering/system design background - the main area of focus will be at the very top left corner and the very right corner of the V model.
• Experience of or able to be customer-facing – able to gather customer requirements to see what they want and need. You must be able to take a step back, analyse...are they the right requirements and do they reflect what the customer wants? Is that what we are delivering?
• Experienced leading a team in a product development environment, must be able to bring the team together and point them in the right direction.

Desirable Requirements of the Product Development Manager

• An Aerospace / Electronics product development background would be helpful
• Any experience with instrumentation and avionics product development would be helpful
