Job description
The RxCelerate group provides a platform for out-sourced drug discovery and development services and has a client base ranging from virtual biotech companies to multinational pharmaceutical companies. We design and deliver complete drug development programmes and project management for our clients from inception through to Phase II clinical studies. We are currently looking to recruit an Associate Director of Medicinal Chemistry to support the business. This is an exciting time to join our team as we scale up to support our growing global footprint and client base. This role will be hybrid based at Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge, but we will also accept candidates who can be hybrid based at Warwick University.
Job Purpose
To lead small molecule drug discovery programs, working with the scientific leads at our partners to define and drive scientific strategy and efficiently take programs from inception through to identification of pre-clinical candidates. Also to mentor and support the scientific development of junior colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and motivate a team of medicinal chemists, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
• Manage drug discovery projects from hit identification through to lead optimization, ensuring client objectives are met to agreed budgets and timelines
• Take full ownership of client communication, building long lasting and productive working relationships
• Collaborate with other scientific departments (e.g., biology, computational chemistry) and external partners
to ensure a seamless client experience
• Provide scientific expertise and guidance to team members, acting as a mentor for their technical
development
• Keep abreast of the latest advances in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery technology to ensure the team maintains cutting edge capabilities
• Play a leading role in the development and implementation of the department's strategic vision and goals
• Contribute to BD and marketing efforts to grow the client base of the department
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Essential
• Strong track record (>10 years) of successfully leading drug discovery programs through to at least pre-clinical candidate nomination, with experience across different therapeutic areas
• Strong scientific expertise in medicinal chemistry principles, building structure-activity relationships and interpreting PK results
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and scientific leadership skills
• Experience of interpreting DMPK data to drive decision making
• A willingness to challenge conventional thinking and embrace new approaches to drug discovery
• Comfortable with leading a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable
• Experience of IND filing process
• Experience of managing third party suppliers
• Track record of successfully transitioning novel molecules into pre-clinical phase
• Experience of working with beyond rule-of-five compounds
