We welcome applications from talented and passionate individuals to join the Henry Royce Institute team at Cranfield University in Materials for Extreme Environments.
About the Role
You will take the technical lead role in short, applied projects on advanced coating technologies, working across the Royce Partners and leveraging its facilities and national networks to deliver technical solutions for industry. You will engage with the Royce Institute hub, external SMEs and academia, establishing collaborative relationships and facilitate the management of resources of Royce Access Schemes, focusing on advanced coatings and their degradation phenomena. You will also be expected to attend selected events such as conferences and workshops.
The role will involve hands-on use of the advanced coating deposition facilities including Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD), Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and the newly acquired PVD-Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) capability, which the role is expected to assist in making operational. Typical applications will involve thin film deposition for corrosion, wear and hydrogen permeation resistance (hydrogen permeation barrier coatings). This latter will focus on deposition of complex multilayer, multi-material films.
You will work closely with both the Technology Platform Leaders and Operations Leader in the Henry Royce Institute at Cranfield, as well as the larger centre team members, including technical officers and research fellows.
About You
You will be educated to PhD degree (or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science, physics, mechanical engineering or similar and have work experience in a field related to materials science principles, particularly those related to ceramics and metals, and solving complex technical problems in this area. You will also have project management experience, and a developing track record of publishing in high quality journals. With the ability to self-organise and work with the minimum of supervision to meet deadlines, you will also have effective and confident presentation skills, and a good attitude towards collaboration and the development of professional relationships.

The Surface Engineering and Precision Centre (SEPc) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in material research and development. Our research covers two main specialisms, Coating/Surface Engineering and Device/Smart Materials; both aiming to undertake world-leading research in the areas of materials engineering and functional materials.
Cranfield University is an associate partner of the Henry Royce Institute, leading state-of-the-art research in materials and coatings for extreme environments. To aid and support this research we have a Henry Royce Institute team within SEPc, and the Application Scientist will support the team by applying specialist technical expertise to support projects at short notice. The role will form part of an interconnected, diverse team, and by working with each other and the business engagement team, will engage with industry (and the national RTO network), to identify, scope and help deliver complex technical solutions in the areas of materials science which cannot be supported by the existing national infrastructure.
