Celanese are recruiting an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join us at the Advanced Elastomer Systems (AES) plant in Newport, South Wales. As the Mechanical Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring production lines operate flawlessly to maintain the exceptional quality our customers love.
Our Newport Elastomer Plant which specialises in Santoprene is located in Newport, Wales on the River Usk only 12 miles northeast of Cardiff, and is one of the world's leading suppliers of thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). These products are used on car windscreens, under-bonnet applications and for interior parts. The versatile product is also used by the construction industry, and for consumer goods such as flexible toothbrushes and kitchen utensils.
The Mechanical Engineer role is 37.5hrs week 8:00 to 16:00 with a certain amount of flexibility and is part of an immediate team of 5 engineers/supervisors with extended maintenance team reporting to a Asset Leader/Engineer.
Additional responsibilities would be contractor supervising and leading/directing on site employees.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyse equipment performance and identify potential failure points.
- Perform detailed root cause analyses to understand equipment malfunctions and develop effective solutions. Lead reliability investigations including action plan implementation.
- Implement predictive maintenance strategies to optimise equipment efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Develop and manage maintenance schedules to ensure consistent equipment reliability.
- Utilise advanced condition monitoring techniques to track machinery health and take proactive measures.
- Work with the Reliability Program Owner to lead efforts to integrate reliability-centered maintenance practices across the production process.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance processes and procedures.
- Work in a team environment, coordinating and supporting the response to operational issues by engaging with other disciplines (Operations; Maintenance/Engineering; Quality/Lab; Product Technology) as needed.
- Consult with internal technical experts, vendors or outside consultants when necessary. Vendor shop visits and repair oversight .
- Identify and translate technical problems into business risk or opportunities; communicating a ‘Case for action’ for mitigations or proposed solutions.
- Scoping of improvement projects including management of change activities
- Support organisational learning by developing/updating procedures and participating in technician training.
- Influence the maintenance organization on behaviours/work processes that will improve safety, reliability and profitability
- Troubleshooting and Technical support for execution of planned maintenance work
- Support and engage with maintenance team to identify and remove daily execution barriers
- Support execution of effective maintenance workflows

Required Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar level of experience
- Proven experience in Mechanical Engineering, preferably within the manufacturing sector.
- Familiarity with predictive and preventive maintenance methodologies.
- Proficiency in reliability tools such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and condition monitoring techniques.
- Proficient with basic computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)
- Strong analytical & problem solving skills, with attention to detail . Demonstrated experience problem solving and troubleshooting on a variety of systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to all levels of the organisation and influence others without authority
- Understand equipment and general plant economic drivers to effectively implement daily optimisation.
- Experience using safe systems of work (i.e. Permit to Work, Risk Assessments, Management of change).
Preferred Skills and Experience :
- Commitment to safety and a proactive attitude toward maintaining a secure work environment.
- Experience with Rotating and Fixed Equipment within the chemical industry would be an advantage.
- Project management experience
- Working knowledge of SAP or other Computerised Maintenance Management Systems. (CMMS)
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with diverse teams.
- Ability to read P&ID, General Arrangement and detail drawings.
- Awareness and general knowledge of controls, control systems and instrumentation.
- Able to create and work to a plan, delivering on time and to expectations.
- Can work independently and drive team goals forward. Ability to conduct and lead meetings.
- Excellent commercial awareness.
