The Acute Medical Unit is a busy department, with capacity for 108 inpatients alongside an Same Day Emergency Care Unit which can see upwards of 50 patients a day. Owing to the large catchment area the organisation covers, it is likely you will be involved in a wide range of pathologies, with opportunity for service improvement, clinical and research within our University Hospital.
The department has bespoke area’s for same day emergency patients, GP admissions as well as delivering short stay and medical admission, treatment and discharge. The department is led by a highly motivated group of consultants who are committed to providing high level care with a drive to develop the service further. The current team is a very cohesive, enthusiastic and supportive and works well together.
The Lead Specialty ACP for Acute Medicine is a vital member of the senior leadership team, responsible for providing expert advice, clinical expertise, clinical leadership, and support to medical, nursing, and allied health professional teams.
This role involves Advanced Practice service development, guidance, and motivation, as well as operational oversight of the existing ACP workforce and Medical Assistant Practitioner (MAP) workforce within Acute Medicine.
You will play a key role in the strategic development of advanced level practice at local, divisional, and partnership levels. Furthermore, you work alongside the MAP Committee and the unit's senior leadership team to support and develop the entire acute medical and non-medical workforce.
You will practice as a senior non-medical clinician within Acute Medicine, working independently and autonomously across the Acute Medical Unit. This includes seeing undifferentiated patients with undiagnosed problems with no supervision. The role involves a 60% direct clinical component (DCC) and 40% related to management, leadership, innovation, and educational responsibilities (SPA).
Essential:
Current professional registration with a relevant professional regulator (e.g., NMC, HCPC, GPhC).
MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice or academic equivalence through an ePortfolio-supported route to include history taking, physical assessment, diagnostics, clinical reasoning, and research.
Completion of a recognised clinical capability framework or portfolio.
Independent Prescriber.
Red Dot or equivalent course in essential radiology.
IR(ME)R Certification.
ALS Provider
Desirable:
Advanced Communications Course.
PGCert Education.
Leadership/Coaching Qualification.
Digital Badge Advanced Practice.
Credentialled with Centre for Advanced Practice in Acute Medicine.
ALS Instructor.
Completed MED3 Not Fit for Work Certification.
Non-Medical Requestor Blood and Blood Products.
FAMUS Accredited or working toward FAMUS Accreditation.
Experience:
Essential:
Significant post-registration experience / consolidation as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.
Significant post-registration specialty experience in Acute Medicine as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.
Experience of working within a Same Day Emergency Care Service.
Experienced in scope of practice development, workforce transformation, including budget management, training needs analysis development, and funding pathways for Advanced Level Practice.
Evidence of good leadership skills.

A firm understanding of Advanced Level Practice within the national scope of the Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice and the Advanced Clinical Practice in Acute Medicine Curriculum Framework.
An awareness and knowledge of the national SAMBA Audit.
Evidence of multidisciplinary team working.
Confidence in advanced level practice development, others' development, and approach to practice.
Interest in clinical research.
Competence in understanding and interpreting clinical diagnostics relevant to the role.
