Overview
First Light Fusion (FLF) is at the forefront of energy generation through inertial confinement fusion with a commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific research. We invite passionate and talented university students to join our dynamic team for an enriching summer internship experience at our Oxfordbased facility.
Internship Opportunities
Embark on an exciting journey with FLF by choosing from four departments:
Experimental Physics: Dive into ongoing experiments gaining handson experience with cuttingedge devices and undertake your own smallscale project.
Pulsed Power: Contribute to the design maintenance and operation of pulsed power machines advancing electrical load designs and electromagnetic launch capabilities.
Computational Science and Engineering: Join a team developing and validating critical software for core physics prediction data science machine learning and engaging in software engineering practices and continuous improvement processes
Target Design: Explore the fascinating world of fusion targets at the forefront of ICF research utilizing inhouse hydrodynamic codes and machinelearning optimization tools.
Internship Period and Benefits
The internship typically runs from August to September but we are open to accommodating candidates with strong preferences for a different period. During the internship you will:
Gain handson laboratory experience with highend scientific diagnostics.
Participate in experiments using our gas gun and pulsed power hypervelocity drivers.
Develop skills in data analysis and coding (Python).
Enhance your understanding of machine learning optimization and related workflows.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who:
Have or are studying a degree in a relevant STEM subject (physics engineering computer science mathematics etc.).
Demonstrate enthusiasm for practical laboratory work.
Possess coding experience (Python MATLAB C etc.).
