Job description
Electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) systems allow patients medication to be selected and recorded electronically with decision support software automatically checking or advising on the dose prescribed, allergies and drug interactions etc. It incorporates the use of other parts of the EPR system to create order sets further enhancing patient safety. The administration of medicines can be recorded so that the whole process of medicines management becomes part of the electronic patient record (EPR). Discharge and requests for medicines can be passed electronically to the pharmacy, speeding up the process, reducing the potential for error and providing accurate and timely information for the GP. EPMA has been shown in research studies to reduce medication errors; it provides a critical part of the EPR and allows reporting on drug use at patient level. The job purpose is to deliver system support, planning, education and training support for the roll out and maintenance of the Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration within the EPR across Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
