Job description

To start in September 2024, we are seeking an exceptional Teacher of Mathematics who is able to develop and inspire our pupils, and who wishes to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole. 

THE ROLE

We are seeking a committed and highly competent classroom teacher who is also able to contribute their own particular strengths and skills to the future development of the department.

This will be on a fixed term contract to act as sabbatical cover between September and December 2024.

Should you be successful you will be required to carry out the general professional duties of a school teacher under the reasonable direction of the Head and to perform such particular duties that from time to time which may reasonably be assigned you by the Head. You would teach approximately 42 periods per fortnight in addition to committing to contribute to the co-curricular life and pastoral support provided by the School.

THE DEPARTMENT

The department follows the Edexcel syllabus; in the 2023 exam series, 76% of pupils achieved an A or A* in Mathematics, and 76% of pupils studying Further Mathematics achieved an A or A*. Several pupils each year compete for places at top universities either in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or other Mathematics-related subjects. Along with offers to read Mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge, many pupils have also gained places for related subjects such as Engineering and Computer Science.

Results at IGCSE level are equally strong; in 2023, 77% of pupils were awarded grades 9 to 7, a figure significantly above the national average. Oundle was one of the first schools in the UK to prepare pupils for the Edexcel International GCSE, which has historically provided better preparation for A level.

The Department offers drop-in Academic Surgeries twice a week for pupils in all years, and weekly university preparation meetings, in addition to Maths clubs and other enrichment activities. A strong emphasis is placed on national Mathematics competitions, with many pupils qualifying for Kangaroo and Olympiad papers at all levels. Senior and Junior pupil teams have also frequently won places in the National Final of the UKMT Team Mathematical Challenge.

THE TOWN

Oundle is a historic market town in Northamptonshire, famous for its beautiful Georgian streets and impressive limestone buildings. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre. The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.
