Teaching Assistant and Cover Supervisor Roles
Location: Canterbury (plus the rest of Kent and Medway)
Salary: £75 - £85 per day
Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm, during school term-time only
Start date: Immediate
Contract: Part-time, Day-to-day, Long-term or Short-term, Flexible schedule
What is a Teaching Assistant?
- Supports the teacher with planning and presenting lessons as instructed
- Supports the learning of the pupils
- Set up the materials for lessons as instructed
- Working 1:1, in small groups or whole classes to enhance learning process
- Be involved in activities with the students, sometimes even fieldtrips as requested
- Identify where children are struggling with learning or are distracted/misbehaving and monitor/engage them more closely
- Make sure classrooms are neat and tidy, clearing up as you work
- You may be involved with working with students who have specific Special Educational Needs and will follow an Educational Health Care Plan as instructed/provided, such as students with Social Emotional Mental Health Disorders, Autism, ADHD etc.
- You may be asked to record attendance/undertake class registers or update any other records
- Review material taught with students who have learning difficulties
What is a Cover Supervisor?
- The same as day-to-day supply teaching but just an opportunity for candidates who are unqualified to do the same!
- If you are looking to get into teaching this will provide you with hands-on paid experience of singlehandedly supervising classes of up to 30 secondary students
- The absent teacher will have set work for the classes so all you must do is ensure the students are instructed as to what activities they need to complete
- Your role is also to ensure that pupils are undertaking the work that has been provided and that the environment is safe and calm
- You will need behaviour management skills and confidence and follow all school and behaviour policies provided
- It’s not just ‘baby-sitting’, the best Cover Supervisors make any learning fun and interesting
- Normally Cover Supervisors are graduates who have potential and enjoy working with young people
