Job description
AALTO’s Zephyr is a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) and is the only one of its kind to have demonstrated day/night longevity in the stratosphere. Providing a persistent and adaptable solution, unlike other unmanned aircraft. Its persistence enables a capability of flying continuously for months at a time, at around 70,000 feet, above weather and conventional air traffic.
The newly established entity will become the leading Global HAPS Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) provider for the Mobile and Satellite Network Operator market – connecting the diverse needs of our customers – whether for rural, overlay capacity, disaster recovery or new services provision. In addition, it shall offer Platform as a Service (PaaS) to the Institutional and Military markets for Earth observation, tracking and communications requirements, as well as operating a global fleet of carbon neutral HAPS platforms – powered by sunlight.
Job Purpose:
Working within the AALTO Flight Test Organisation, Flight Test Engineers are responsible for the safe and effective delivery of Flight Test & Evaluation activities in the UK and overseas. Working predominantly from Farnborough, UK, this role will see the successful candidate regularly deploy within the UK and remote overseas locations to support the ongoing development of our Zephyr air system.
Responsibilities:
Direct the safe and effective delivery of Flight Test Engineering activities in deployed locations around the world with AALTO’s fleet of full and sub-scale test assets
Work collaboratively with the Air Operations and Engineering teams to safely and effectively plan, execute and report on Flight Test Engineering activities
Conduct Flight Test Engineering activities against system-wide Test & Evaluation (T&E) objectives
Manage Flight Test risk to ALARP and tolerable levels
Share and develop best practice to enhance the Flight Test & Evaluation of the Zephyr air system
Essential Experience and Qualifications:
Flight Test Engineering experience
Hold a Level 3 qualification (or higher) in an Engineering discipline
Working knowledge of flight physics and avionics systems, with particular focus on Uncrewed Air Systems
Able to meet UK DVLA Group 2 or medical standards or a minimum of Class 3 aviation medical standards from an ICAO contracting state.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications:
Qualified Category 1 (Class A) or Category 2 (Class B) Flight Test Engineer or Test Pilot from a recognised Test Pilot School
Previous UAS / RPAS experience, particularly BVLOS operations
Knowledge of UK, US and European regulatory environments
Experience with COTS or bespoke Flight Test Instrumentation and data acquisition systems
Aviation experience as flight crew or engineer, either military or civil
Ability to reduce flight data and form contextualised analysis, advice and recommendations
Capable of explaining technical details to customers in a concise and expert manner
Training in, or understanding of, CRM, NOTECHs, TEM policies and practices
An understanding of the technical, operational and environmental factors affecting Zephyr and other HAPS platforms
