Job description


An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the dynamic, motivated Speech and Language Therapy Team at the Royal Marsden, as a Cancer Rehabilitation Assistant. This post is based in both Chelsea and Sutton and will involve carrying out bespoke therapy programmes to a range of cancer patients with support from qualified Speech and Language Therapists. This post might attract a candidate keen to explore Speech and Language Therapy as a career. This exciting role involves providing therapy to those with communication and swallowing disorders in a range of oncology patients, across the lifespan. The majority of the caseload covers those with head and neck cancer as well as other tumour groups. There is also a small administrative component. You will be working alongside your SLT and other AHP colleagues in our multi-professional structure. You will be supported by members of our excellent team and with a range of opportunities to achieve a wealth of experience. We have a well-established supervision and support structure. • The cancer rehabilitation assistant is an active member of a team that provides a high quality; evidence based rehabilitation service for the patient with cancer across the lifespan. Taking referrals from qualified Speech and Language Therapy staff, the post holder will work both independently and with supervision to deliver individualised therapeutic treatment, working towards patient-centred goals. They will have responsibility for their own case load together with advice and support from therapy staff.
• Cancer patients may present with complex physical, emotional and psychological needs as a result of their cancer diagnosis and its treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

• Developing greater awareness of the resources and educational opportunities available to enable patients and their families to make informed choices to participate in their care plan
• Communicate effectively with other staff within the Trust, and outside agencies as required about patient related matters
• Communicate effectively with patients and carers, in keeping with their level of understanding, culture and background. This may include imparting sensitive or unwelcome news
• Tailor care and communication dependent on the individuals’ diagnosis and needs
• Attend ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings to develop an understanding of the health care team approach to the total care of the patient and provide verbal feedback as appropriate
