Job description
Solomons Europe is a Consultancy celebrating its 25 th year in business, working in the Power, Infrastructure and Renewables sectors, on large projects and long-term frameworks. As an SME business, we bring agility and hunger to our client projects, which means we have had opportunities to work with some of the largest in the business, as well as some of the smallest, and we think that this gives us an edge!
Our teams advise and support our clients in the development and delivery of procurement, contract and commercial management strategies at all levels of the construction supply chain. We are strongly invested in our regions and are focused on the achievement of not just commercial project success for our clients, but also the delivery of positive socioeconomic outcomes in the communities in which we work.
You will be joining a progressive, forward-thinking, ‘bit of a rebel’ type organisation, that isn’t afraid to put its head above the parapet and doesn’t like to be the same as everyone else. We prefer to strike out independently and watch others follow our lead.
We are looking for innovative and imaginative Senior Quantity Surveyors to join our regional team, who are optimistic problem solvers, passionate about projects and visibly motivated to drive commercial success for the project, client, and stakeholders. In addition to the technical acumen and competence required as a Senior Quantity Surveyor, professional behaviours hold equal importance at Solomons Europe, with all our teams required to be curious, adaptable, and effective communicators. In this role, we see you as someone who holds a positive influence with strong ethical values and who will act as a guardian to our projects and promote healthy, happy and inclusive teams.
So, if you want to join a QS team that likes to be different and work in either a pre or post-contract team (or both!), then we want to hear from you.
The opportunity:
Working as a Senior Surveyor for Solomons Europe, you will act as a professional advisor, integrated into client projects across the region. You will be fully conversant with contract administration and project control aspects, preferably under NEC3® and NEC4® forms of contract, and capable of holding a lead commercial role in the management of subcontract procurement, administration, and cost forecasting.
As the Senior QS, you will be a supportive team member and liaise regularly with the Solomons management team, providing client insights, project pipeline updates and any potential work-based experience opportunities that may help to build capability, knowledge and experience within your team.
You will lead contract and commercial matters for your client, demonstrating an in-depth understanding and knowledge of project progress and current commercial status. You will be effective and informed in providing strategic commercial advice and analysis to both project teams and at a senior project level. Identifying creative solutions to complex project problems is an integral part of this role and requires project-wide collaboration and influence to drive change to enable the adoption and dissemination of new and improved approaches, methods, processes, and solutions.
We pride ourselves on the open and inclusive culture we have built, supporting progression for all throughout the business, and treating every team member as an individual.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- Be educated to degree level or equivalent in Quantity Surveying / Procurement / Commercial Management / Engineering BSc (HNC/HND qualified candidates with the relevant experience may be considered).
- You will ideally be qualified or working towards the attainment of professional membership or qualification of an accredited professional institute (for example, RICS/CIPS/ICE or similar).
- You have a strong understanding of the principles of contract law & changes to legislation, current case law, the relevant best practice guidance and statutes applicable to your project (e.g. Construction Playbook, HGLDA), standard contractual provisions and the appropriateness and differences between Standard forms of main and sub-contract – e.g., NEC, FIDIC, JCT, etc.
- You are highly proficient in commercial controls and the administration of change provisions relating to contract variations/compensation events, contract conundrums and entitlements.
- You can offer strategic commercial expertise and act as an advisor to the client with consideration of the financial implications and available management actions to improve cash flow and profitability.
- As the commercial lead in a project team, you will be skilled in providing accurate and timely commercial analysis and reports (CVRs, Project status reports, Subcontract Management, Procurement, etc.) to support target-driven KPIs and commercial results for your client.
- You are active in mentoring members of the team to support a learning and improvement culture on your project and will lead discussions of ideas and options with the project team for improving project administration and commercial processes.
- You will have proven experience in supervising quantity surveyors in either a pre or post contract capacity, setting and meeting personal and team deadlines, action plans and goals, supported by the delegation of tasks and responsibilities to others within the team.
- You can use both professional and technical skills to help influence, lead and develop strong working relationships and collaborative networks across client organisations, professional networks, multi-disciplinary teams, key stakeholders, and the wider supply chain.
- You understand Solomons’s values and purpose and bring them to life as part of everyday interactions, behaviours, and team discussions, aligning the day-to-day client priorities with bigger-picture Solomons aspirations and services.
- You can create a sense of community and collaboration among your team, regardless of physical location and will engage in activities and be part of the ‘All 4 One’ Solomons ethos, upholding professional standards of behaviour, and supporting a team culture that is inclusive and supportive.
- Ideally, you should have a detailed knowledge of contractual, commercial and financial management systems and administration tools (i.e. CEMAR, COINS, Fastdraft) and experience working in the process, energy, engineering and/or infrastructure sectors.
- Have a full UK driving license and access to a car to use for business travel (essential due to the locations of Client sites and Solomons Offices).
- We pride ourselves on the open and inclusive culture we have built, supporting progression for all throughout the business, and treating every team member as an individual.
