Job description

The National Archives’ Legislation Services Team is looking for a Senior Legal Editor to join its busy team at Kew.

The National Archives is responsible for publishing and editing UK legislation and manages legislation.gov.uk which provides free public access to the Statute Book. You will join the Legislation Services Team as one of our Senior Legal Editors, responsible for carrying out the advanced editorial work required to bring legislation on legislation.gov.uk fully up to date, and to keep it up to date.

About the role:

As a Senior Legal Editor, you will undertake the editorial revision (‘update’) of existing items of legislation with amendments made by later legislation. You will use bespoke XML editorial tools to carry out editorial revision or update of legislation documents in order to create new “point in time” versions for publication as revised legislation on legislation.gov.uk and you will also work collaboratively with The National Archives’ Case Law team to help edit the case law that is published in the Find Case Law website (https://caselaw.nationalarchives.gov.uk/).

You will also be responsible for analysing high volumes of new legislation for its effects on existing legislation, and carrying out the detailed technical research required to prepare for update (typically relating to the extent, territorial application and commencement of legislation, as well as connected savings and transitional provisions). This requires an excellent eye for detail and an expert understanding of technical legal terminology and concepts.

Following a probationary period, we will also ask you to review the work of other editors and external contributors to prescribed editorial standards. Review tasks are of crucial importance to the maintenance of a trusted and high-quality public service and you will be responsible for ensuring a high level of accuracy in the revised legislation published on legislation.gov.uk. As a reviewer, you will be expected to provide an advanced level of editorial advice and coaching to colleagues and external contributors, particularly in relation to the effects of legislation and editorial policy and procedures. You will also provide technical support relating to the use of the editorial systems.

You will contribute to the ongoing development of the editorial process and ultimately of the legislation.gov.uk website, including collaborating with colleagues to improve editorial policies, tools and systems, by providing appropriate input based on your knowledge and experience. You will ensure you remain up to date with developments in editorial and legislative issues and trends, and develop a strong understanding of legislation users and their needs.

You will contribute to user testing of new features and processes, attending project iteration meetings and conference calls as necessary, and providing support and advice to the management team, technical colleagues and external development contractors. You will also have the opportunity to get involved with other legislation-related tasks across the team.

This is a Fixed Term Appointment until 31st March 2025.
