Job description

KEY DUTIES Have overall responsibility and accountability for the management of the ward or department, providing a dynamic leadership role within the team always ensuring that patients and their families are at the centre of the ward / dept. philosophy. Ensuring effective communication and engagement is maintained at all times, ensuring regular team meetings and opportunities for staff at all levels to contribute to decision making at ward or department level. Able to make effective decisions autonomously / independently without supervision and in partnership with patients, families, and the multi-disciplinary team. Support the Matron and wider members of the Management Team in achieving the strategic objectives for the Maternity department and the Trust. Demonstrate strong leadership and act as a role model for the midwifery team, ensuring the delivery of a high standard of evidence-based care to patients and providing support for all staff on the unit. Responsibility for development within the department / ward, taking a lead role in ensuring continuous improvements in standards for the benefit of good patient care, represent the department / ward and Division at appropriate Trust meetings. Facilitate and support the education of registered and non-registered staff and work in association with, and in support of the Matron in defining standards of care and practice aimed at developing and / or improving the quality of patient care. Manage and co-ordinate a ward / department team, working autonomously without supervision, providing professional clinical leadership and responsibility for ensuring an environment of empowerment through coaching, teaching and facilitation. At all times working to ensure the most effective use of all ward resources. To participate in the Maternity Senior Midwives Bleep rota providing a helicopter view of the maternity unit and ensure the unit is running safely and efficiently Participate in audit and research programmes in order to develop innovative practice and help develop research culture by keeping abreast of current best practice. Uses available research to plan, implement and evaluate strategies and programmes of care, which lead to improvement in care Take the lead in responding to complaints ensuring timely completion of action plans and dissemination of lessons learnt. Support newly qualified staff and teach qualified and unqualified staff, including students. Demonstrate innovative practice by assisting in the development of quality initiatives within the Directorate. To continually promote the Trust infant feeding strategy and support the continued implementation of the Unicef Baby Friendly initiative. Organise effective staff rostering, and skill mix to ensure the provision of a safe and effective service and effective use of Midwifery Bank (e-roster) CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain Professional Registration At all times work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. Ensure the midwifery care within the ward / dept reach the required professional standard. Manage the ward teams, identify and monitor care priorities and organise workload for identified group of patients in the Division. Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy and critical judgement. Ensure that accurate and comprehensive health records are maintained using appropriate documentation, adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct and Trust policy, pertaining to patient confidentiality and data protection. Motivate colleagues and self to deliver high standards of care in line with the unit / ward philosophy and Trust strategic objectives. Advise staff and students on care strategies and provide rationale and teaching of evidence-based care to other team members. Deliver skilled, high quality, expert and evidence-based midwifery care to all patients and their families attending the department. To undertake midwifery interventions consistent with evidence-based practice, transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet the patient and familys needs. To deliver care in accordance with identified standards and contribute toward the monitoring and development of standards. To be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in this clinical speciality, able to interpret information and take appropriate action and lead others to do so. Manage challenging and difficult situations with a professional and emotionally appropriate response, ensuring the needs of the patient remain paramount. To be personally competent in the use of all equipment and technology in the area and ensuring that it is serviced and kept in good order at all times. Responsible for ensuring that all staff within the area is also competent and that all training is recorded appropriately according to Trust Policy and NMC guidelines. To work in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure co-ordination of appropriate inputs to a patients admission, stay and discharge. To be actively involved in referring to other agencies and specialities Social Services, Therapy services, Safeguarding Team, etc. Participate and assist in setting standards of patient care based on sound research findings. To be competent and abide by statutory rules and regulations concerning the safe storage and administration of drugs to all patients. Carry out instructions / treatments as prescribed by medical staff, including the checking and administering of drugs with safety and accuracy. Follow Trust and ward drug policies and protocols and encourage other members of staff to do the same. Work as part of the multidisciplinary team in supporting patients and their families during the delivery of bad or distressing news. Be able to give and manage the breaking of bad / distressing news and ensure the patients and family are treated with sensitivity and responsive of their needs. Be aware of the psychological, social and emotional needs of patients and their families in relation to hospital admissions / attendances and effectively minimise the stress caused by hospitalisation. Undertakes relevant clinical skills and functions commensurate with the role requirements, following appropriate training and assessment and assist in the training of junior staff (e.g. venepuncture, cannulation, and administration of medication under Patient Group Directives, aseptic dressings and other medical procedures. To utilise highly developed physical skills e.g. preparing and giving intravenous medication, assembling equipment, maintaining infusions, wound care, ECG recording. Monitor and action as required standards of cleanliness and the patient environment within the clinical area. Take personal responsibility for own professional development and keep up to date with relevant research applicable to area of expertise. To understand own role and scope, identify own development needs and take responsibility for their continuing professional development and performance. Attend Trust and local department mandatory study days, and other study days identified by the Matron / KSF as being relevant to sphere of practice. Participate in clinical supervision in accordance with NMC guidelines. TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES Facilitate the education of registered and non-registered staff and work in association with, and the support of, the matron in defining standards of care and practice aimed at developing and / or improving the quality of patient care. Participate in teaching, supervising and demonstrating practice skills at all levels to patients, families, students, medical staff and nurses. Participate in ward teaching programmes. Work with the Matron / Practice Educator to develop protocols and guidelines relevant to nursing practice. Ensure that newly qualified midwives achieve their competencies throughout their preceptorship period in collaboration with the midwifery team. Participate in appraisals for staff and assist in objective setting. To counsel staff in relation to their personal and professional needs in consultation with the ward / department manager. Actively participate with ward staff, practice development nurse and link tutors in ensuring an optimum learning environment and learning experience for students in accordance with Trust policy. To make effective use of appropriate learning opportunities for themselves and others and apply learning to practice. Lead the implementation of teaching, research and audit projects. Apply research findings to nursing practice. LINE MANAGEMENT / SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibility to ensure that all staff have a personal development plan to meet their personal and Trust objectives, making use of the Trust capability policy where appropriate. Identify staff development needs and take responsibility for their continuing professional development and performance. Ensure that all staff are enabled to attend Trust and local department mandatory study days, and other study days identified through their PDR process. Maintain a safe working environment at all times, recognising the health and safety of the patients, visitors and staff. Take a pro-active role in maintaining effective communication with all the members of the multi-disciplinary team. Ensure that communication with patients and their families remains effective in meeting the sensitive needs of the patient. Able to communicate with empathy and reassurance in demanding and sometimes challenging situations. Responsibility and accountability for ensuring a positive budgetary position, and ensuring that resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. Monitor and manage in accordance to Trust policy episodes of staff sickness, annual leave and study leave, in accordance to Trust Policy.
