Job description

As the evening ranger you will be the eyes and ears of Lyme up until the estate closes at 8pm. You'll have fantastic people skills and be able to work independently to deliver a variety of maintenance and security tasks. Lone working is a crucial part of this role so your ability to work efficiently and manage your own workload is essential.

This role will ideally suit those looking to begin a career in conservation and land management.

Hours: Part time 9 hours per week working weekends only

Salary: £10.78 per hour. We are currently undertaking our pay review process and it is likely that this salary will be increased from 1st April 2024.

Contract: Fixed term contract until November 2024

Interviews: 15th March

Internally you'll be known as an Assistant Ranger.

Lyme is beautiful historic property with a wide variety of habitats and the ranger team at Lyme have the pleasure of looking after it. The work is fast paced and requires you to think quickly. The ranger role at Lyme is very practical from covering all estate maintenance tasks to visitor engagement activities. We actively manage our woodlands and look after our grasslands through a carefully thought-out grazing regime. We look after approx. 1400 acres of habitat consisting of historic parkland, woodlands, ponds, meadows and moorland.

We have very high visitor numbers which requires thought and management within the ranger role. The team are very passionate about nature conservation and work hard to make sustainable decisions to improve the land within and outside Lyme. The team is compact with a team 5 but we work in harmony with the rest of the property including house, garden and with volunteers.

As Assistant Ranger, you’ll undertake different task in countryside management. This will include nature conservation working to make habitats better for wildlife, site inspections, routine practical maintenance, monitoring of wildlife habitats, supporting volunteers, and helping to deliver activities that strengthen people’s connections with the outdoors.

As no two days are the same, the nature of the role means a flexible approach is crucial to ensure the right level of support is given across the site. So, whether you’re maintaining our green spaces or talking to people, you’ll inspire others to love our beautiful places as much as you do.

Key Responsibilities:

Actively engaging with visitors to ensure that their visit to the park is enjoyable and create opportunities to convey key messages that will inspire visitors but also promote responsible behaviour
Responding to radio calls and resolving/investigating issues that arise on the estate
Carrying out presentation work across the property, including mowing and strimming key areas
Repairing park infrastructure and estate furniture as required, such as gates, fences and stiles
Undertaking basic livestock checks
Emptying bins and litter picking areas as required
Helping the ranger team to deliver a programme of summer engagement activities and contributing to wider property events
Locking gates and ensuring visitors and other members of staff have left the park safely and on time
Work alongside and provide support to volunteers

We’d love to hear from you if you are:
able to demonstrate practical experience in land, conservation and access management to level 2 or have 6 months vocational experience
willing to work outside in all weathers and deliver tasks when the weather conditions aren’t ideal
comfortable working in a flexible and adaptable way
able to work alone or under direction, and as part of a team
positive with an approachable attitude
happy and willing to learn new things
enjoy the work you do and happy to share this with others
