Job description

Riverston is a small independent school with a strong inclusive ethos, with the majority of our students granted EHCPs from the various surrounding London Local Authorities. We are looking for an enthusiastic, child centred and dedicated Science & Food Technician. The successful candidate will require excellent attention to detail and care with the health and safety of both the science laboratory and food tech room. Teamwork is very much at the heart of the school, and so we are looking for someone who will fit in this, as well as with our ethos and community.

The Role

·        Carry out maintenance and basic repairs to equipment, if necessary, reporting any issues that need to be dealt with by outside contractors.

·        Prepare equipment and resources for use by the teaching staff and pupils.

·        Clean equipment after use in Sciences Labs & Food Tech room. Carry out regular Health & Safety checks on rooms and equipment used.

·        Ensure safe storage of all materials and equipment within the laboratories, prep rooms, and kitchens in line with Health & Safety regulations.

·        Dispose of chemicals in accordance with Health & Safety regulations, keep a concise list if chemicals and equipment for resource control.

·        At times maybe required to assist in the teaching of a lesson with practical demonstrations and assist pupils with practical work.

·        Carry out risk assessments where necessary, ensure teaching staff have the correct risk assessment in place. Keep up to date with Health & Safety requirements advising teaching staff of any changes.

·        Placing orders, checking deliveries.

·        Assist with school trips where necessary, clubs & completions.

Skills & Qualifications.

·        Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline, preferably biochemistry.

·        Proven experience in laboratory techniques and procedures.

·        Industry experience in food and nutrition preferable.

·        Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

·        Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instruments.

·        Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

·        To work as part of a team

·        To be able to multitask

·        Willingness to complete CPD appropriate to subjects

·        To hold a food hygiene certificate and CLEAPS awareness training (training can be provided if needed).

·        Has a passion for educating young minds.

·        Is self-motivated & has a high expectation of attainment for all young people.

Safeguarding

The post-holder is responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people for whom they are responsible, or with whom they come into contact, and will adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Safeguarding (Child Protection) Policy at all times.  If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of children in the School s/he must report any concerns to the School’s Designated Safeguarding Lead or to the Headteacher.
