What you will do in your working day

Apprentices working at GEA Process Engineering will be working as part of the team, working to complete the requirements of our customers. To ensure you gain the experience you will:

• Demonstrate the ability to read and understand technical drawings in order to assemble build packs and machines to a specified requirement
• Assemble both large- and small-scale machines
• Use and demonstrate a variety of electrical skills and knowledge to efficiently build complex assemblies
• Work as an individual or within a team.
• Understand all health and safety policies and procedures, including the use of the appropriate protective clothing
• Partake in technical and safety training
• Use a variety of hand and power tools, including Lathes and Mills
• Be trained in using overhead cranes and other mobile lifting equipment

The training you will be getting

Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.

You will also begin a knowledge qualification, a BTEC Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering, (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years.

After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer, 4 days a week, working on developing your skills; ultimately leading to your End Point Assessment.

SETA will make regular visits during this period of time to ensure you will covering all the required aspects of the Standard, which includes a practical element, a theory test and a professional discussion, regarding the work achieved with your employer.

These final tests are administered by an independent assessment organisation and take place in the last six months of the apprenticeship.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

After successful completion of the level 3 apprenticeship the candidate would be considered a qualified fitter and could join the team as a fully skilled member of staff. At GEA we have various different routes and opportunities for progression. This could include, but is not limited to –
