Senior Mechanical Engineer

Oxford Ionics

Location

Oxford, Oxfordshire | United Kingdom

Job description

The future is quantum. Oxford Ionics is a high-performance quantum computing company delivering world-leading innovations to create the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum computers to solve the world's most important problems. Quantum Computing offers a radically new way of building computers that harnesses the power of quantum physics to outperform conventional supercomputers exponentially. Using our unique trapped-ion technology, we are at the forefront of the race to unleash the real potential of quantum computing.

What to expect

At Oxford Ionics, we are at the forefront of pioneering the development of the first practical quantum computer. Our groundbreaking systems are based on ion traps, which confine individual atomic ions tens of microns above the surface of a chip. We design and build our systems in-house, integrating optomechanics, vacuum and cryogenic technologies, superconducting devices, vibration isolation, and magnetic shielding. We are dedicated to constant innovation and performance enhancement across each generation of devices.

As our Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be an integral part of our multidisciplinary team, leading efforts to design, manufacture, and construct our advanced trapped ion quantum systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to creating quantum computing infrastructure from the ground up, working closely with scientists, technicians, and engineers to bring theoretical concepts into reality.

What you'll be responsible for

You will support the end-to-end quantum system design process, from initial concept to manufacturing and assembly, including:

Requirements

You  do not  need any prior experience in quantum computing for this role. However, you will need a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with an advanced degree preferred. You should have proven experience in mechanical design, especially in applying Design for Manufacturability (DfM) and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles. Strong skills in CAD and CAE are essential, especially with experience in SolidWorks and optomechanical design. A background in working with scientific equipment is important, and experience with cryogenic and vacuum systems is highly desirable. The ability to work independently with a high level of autonomy is crucial, yet you must also possess a collaborative nature.

This position is ideal for a Senior Mechanical Engineer who thrives in innovative environments and is enthusiastic about exploring the frontiers of quantum computing technology. By joining our team, you'll contribute to a dynamic environment that values creativity, precision, and collaboration in the pursuit of transforming the future of computing.

Benefits

Oxford Ionics is at the cutting edge of quantum innovation. We need people like you with the necessary skills, vision and capability. In return, we'll recognise your engagement and excellence with a range of benefits. You'll find opportunities to further your career with a world-class team, business stock options, uncapped annual leave, flexible working hours, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family and much more.

Oxford Ionics is committed to equal opportunity for all.
