Job Role:
We seek to appoint an exceptionally high-calibre teacher with superb subject knowledge to stimulate, inspire and challenge our high-achieving girls and who is prepared to give full commitment to the aims and ethos of the Mathematics Department and to Guildford High School. The successful candidate should have a warm, friendly and supportive teaching style to nurture the pupils’ interest in Mathematics. We are a very successful team looking for someone who can work collaboratively, helping us strive to continue to improve our already outstanding teaching, generating new ideas and initiatives to benefit our pupils.
Mathematics Department
The Department is made up of nine full-time members of staff and one part-time staff member, several of whom have other roles within the school. The Mathematics Department has an excellent record of academic success at IGCSE, A Level and Oxbridge entry. Over 60% of our Sixth Form pupils choose to study Mathematics at A-level, with around 20-25 pupils each year choosing to study A-level Further Mathematics, allowing many opportunities to teach both Pure and Applied Mathematics to A-level standard. We follow the Edexcel A-level specification for Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
In each of Years 7 to 11, there are either five or six teaching sets, grouped by ability. All sets follow the same scheme of work. Years 10 and 11 follow the Edexcel IGCSE course, all sitting the Higher Tier in Year 11. In addition, two or three sets in Year 11 take the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics.
Numerous Mathematics super-curricular activities are provided by the Department including early-morning enrichment sessions for Years 8-11, Smarties Puzzle Club for Year 7 and Sixth Form enrichment groups. To enrich our students academically we run an annual trip for enthusiastic mathematicians, this year we are going to the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park. Pupils achieve highly at all levels in the UKMT Maths Challenges and Olympiads and local team Maths competitions. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to these initiatives or to develop new ones.
This is not intended to be exhaustive, and the post-holder may perform any other duties reasonably required by the Head.
