Our client, a global leader in manufacturing high-quality marine engineering products, is seeking a skilled Design Engineer to join their collaborative team in Newton Abbott. Ideally you will have a background within the marine industry.

Role

To support the continued success of their business they have a fantastic new opportunity for a marine design engineer.

You will be working within the Engineering team and will have the ability to participate in all phases of the product design life cycle from design of equipment for the very latest vessel projects to design support for Craft undergoing refit.

What you will do:

As part of the MMP design team your main responsibilities as a Design Engineer will include:

• The design and development complete sterngear assemblies (including propellers, shafts, couplings, tube / bearing assemblies etc).
• Technical specification of components.
• Completion and checking of drawings prior to manufacture.
• Consulting with customers regarding production specifications
• Ensure that designs adhere to relevant classification society requirements where applicable.
• Contribute to the development of product lines.
• Standardisation of drawings to support on-site manufacturing.

Working within the team, as a Design Engineer you will have or need:

• A minimum of two years’ experience in product / component design.
• The ability to plan and execute tasks to achieve timescales and costs.
• Experience in 2D drafting using CAD software (conceptual/detail & assemblies).
• Understanding of detail drawing and geometric tolerancing.
• The ability to communicate/support other areas of the business, i.e., Production, Manufacturing, Vendors/Suppliers, Customer Support, quality control and warranty.
• An organized mind-set.
• Motivated and Proactive.
• Ability to communicate with peers.
• Ability to prioritise and organise own workload.
• Ability to support problem solving with structured methodologies.
• Ability to work as part of a team whilst showing self-motivation and initiative.
• Flexible and adaptable.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate via reports, emails and presentations.
• Be able to work and communicate within all areas of the organisation from shop floor to management.
• Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, SharePoint.
• Good written and spoken fluency in English.
• Good standard of mathematical and numerical skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines when required.
• Ability to communicate all design information clearly to others – this is essential as the position will both overlap with and support the sales department.

Advantageous in the role of Design Engineer are:

Experience in component design

Experience with AutoCAD or similar design software.

Experience with SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion 360, or similar 3D design software.

IT literate – Microsoft Office suite

Knowledge of machining processes

Strong Mathematical and numerical skills

Experience of managing workloads and working to a deadline.

Experience in Marine, Mechanical engineering or a related subject would be desirable.

Outgoing team player with an enthusiastic, self motivated and analytical approach.
