Mildmay Oaks is a low secure and locked rehabilitation service for men with learning disability and autism spectrum disorder, and for women with learning disability. The post holder has responsibility to provide a supporting role to the Speech and Language Therapy Department under the direction of professionally qualified Therapists. With the guidance, support and monitoring from the Speech and Language Therapist the Support Practitioner will: Work with named clients on a 1:1 basis Support and facilitate group therapy sessions Support clients to develop communication skills Represent the Speech and Language Therapy Department at meetings across the hospital or externally, when appropriate. Develop, prepare and maintain therapeutic materials for individual Clients, the department or the hospital Be responsible for clerical and administrative tasks within the Speech and Language Therapy Dept. Main Duties Clinical To provide support to the speech and language therapy service for adults with a learning disability, ASD, Mental Health and Challenging Behaviours. To work independently with named Clients under guidance and with support from the speech and language therapist and be accountable for their own actions. To deliver Speech and Language Therapy treatment packages for named clients with communication disorders, following a program that has been developed by the qualified Speech and Language Therapist. To monitor Clients progress, taking account of their environment and adjust own interventions accordingly and report back to the Therapist. To provide clear and accurate feedback to the qualified Speech and Language Therapists with regards to client participation, achievements and progress. To demonstrate and model therapeutic techniques to carers, other clinicians and family. Maintain and contribute accurate entries onto Client records, both paper and electronic. To facilitate group therapy with either the speech and language therapist or appropriate hospital staff. This will include preparing the environment, preparing materials, supporting the clients and clear feedback to the lead therapist and recording accurately in patient notes. To organise and prioritise own workload, under supervision of qualified staff, using effective time management skills. To be responsible for providing information to the professional lead for Speech and Language Therapy for the purpose of planning and policy development/issues including the prioritising needs relating to the service. Exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances, dealing with people with severe challenging behaviour.  To be able to manage the emotional consequences of working with distressing conditions To manage own time and be able to prioritise tasks. To work collaboratively if requested by the Speech and Language Therapist with other professionals within the MDT team. To contribute to discussions on service/policy development, providing comments on proposals. Provide and maintain an inventory of therapeutic resources within the Speech and Language Therapy Department. Prepare and keep updated new therapeutic resources. Provide and maintain an inventory of all clerical needs resources within the Speech and Language Therapy Department and order when appropriate clerical resources. Professional To attend mandatory training and complete all mandatory e-learning To maintain a professional attitude and maintain confidentiality at all times. To participate in evidence-based practice and clinical audit within the specialism. To attend team meetings, specialist meetings and in-service training. To work positively with colleagues to maintain clinically effective relationships. To be responsible for following laid down infection control procedures. To be responsible for complying with the Hospital Clinical Governance requirements. To be responsible for adhering to Hospital Policies and Procedures. To participate in clinical supervision/mentoring and annual appraisals.. To work with the Hospital to manage demands placed on the service.
