Job description

Purpose of the Position:
The Communications Specialist at Northern State University is a versatile role responsible for a wide range of communications, written content, and public relations initiatives. The primary focus is on generating engaging and impactful content, including news releases, feature articles, profiles, and other assignments for various print and electronic publications. Additionally, the Marketing and Communications Specialist plays a key role in development and marketing communications, assists with large-scale campus events, and supports the Director of Communications and Marketing in media engagements.

Job Duties:
Content Creation and Management:
* Develop creative and persuasive written content for email marketing campaigns, annual
reports, newsletters, and press releases.
* Identify stories with news value and provide engaging internal content for multiple
communication channels.
* Write and edit news articles, profiles, and other assignments for various print and
electronic publications.
* Create and implement content for news pages on the Northern State University website,
maintaining a consistent brand voice.
* Follow the university’s style guide, which adheres to AP Style, ensuring consistency and
accuracy in written content.

Media and Public Relations:
* Develop, manage, and expand relationships with key print, broadcast, and online
journalists at local, state, regional, and national levels.
* Monitor media coverage of Northern State University and maintain a comprehensive
media database.
Generate media coverage through story pitching, press releases, and innovative press
strategies.
Stay up-to-date with marketing trends, adapting strategies to the changing landscape.

Website and Social Media Management:
* Produce and publish news content on the Northern State University website, ensuring a
strong brand voice across all sections.
* Leverage social networking tools (Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and
Facebook) to generate press and deliver up-to-date news and information.
* Manage and develop Northern State University’s social media presence, keeping up with emerging trends and incorporating them into strategies.

Communications and Collaboration:
* Research, write, edit, and proofread copy for Northern State University use in various media.
* Manage internal communication initiatives and editing schedules.
* Collaborate with faculty, students, administrators, and staff to publicize events, accomplishments, initiatives, awards, and research.
* Stay informed about industry best practices and the latest marketing trends, applying them to communications strategies.
* Update and maintain Northern State University’s style guide, following AP Style, to ensure consistency and adherence to industry standards.

Qualifications:
* Associates degree or higher preferred in Marketing, Communications, or a related field; or three years of directly related experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Proven experience in creative writing, preferably in a marketing or public relations role.
* Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail.
* Proficiency in crafting compelling content for various mediums, including email marketing, newsletters, annual reports, press releases, and social media.
* Knowledge of marketing principles and ability to develop persuasive marketing copy.
* Familiarity with media relations, including building relationships with journalists and securing media coverage.
* Experience in website content management systems and social media platforms.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Experience in software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
* Adaptability to the changing world of marketing, staying on top of trends and incorporating them into communications strategies.
