Job description

Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship

Our Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeships are aimed at people who have a passion for learning and innovation.

Increasingly automated. Ever more sophisticated. This is the future our vision holds for our vehicles. As a Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprentice, you will implement technology solutions aligned to your pathway, to develop new products and services and increase productivity using digital technologies. JLR is a world leader in engineering – we make incredible luxury vehicles. Our aspirations are no different for Digital and Technology. Our people, our teams and our culture are at the heart of everything we do.

Software Engineering pathway
Software is a key component of our future cars as the technology in vehicles continues to increase to meet customers’ evolving needs. Before the customer enters the car, technology identifies the key fob and their phone to recognise them and allow access. During their journey, software aids their driving with stability and assistance systems and provides a welcoming and refined user experience through in-vehicle infotainment. In short, software gives us our edge. It makes our thinking come alive in the real world. This pathway will show you how to design, build and test ground-breaking software that really delivers. You’ll also learn how to integrate engineering principles that deliver superior analysis, development and built-in security.

Along the way, you could work in any of the following functional areas: Engineering Body Chassis (EBC), Digital Products Platform (DPP), Engineering Propulsion (EP) or Engineering Operations (EO). You will be asked to indicate your preference during the application process.

Digital Product Platform (DPP) - Gaydon
DPP delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines including complex systems design and electronic hardware and software creation. The features you may expect, such as cabin interior functions or infotainment but also technologies such as connectivity, off-board processing and mobile app design to provide a wider range of customer experience.

The projects worked on will cover a wide scope, as most vehicle functions have a software element including propulsion and energy management systems as well as active suspension control, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), infotainment and convenience features such as interior cabin controls.

You could be involved in many different projects from day one, including automation and infrastructure. You could be part of a team implementing a cloud-based infrastructure providing the tools and environment for large software teams to work within.

Or you could be working in low-level software development ensuring the in-vehicle computer systems have the best balance of performance. Low-Level boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast boot processes are areas you will focus on to produce the best in-vehicle performance.

Engineering Body Chassis (EBC) - Gaydon
EBC is responsible for most of what you see and touch in our cars. We work closely with our design studios to translate award-winning concepts into engineering reality, factoring in performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight. Our remit spans lids, doors, structures, cabin and safety, cockpit, climate, seats, exteriors, lighting, glazing and roofs.

You will be part of a team that is responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You will learn tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise engineering solutions that will enrich your capability, increase your profile, and accelerate your development as an engineer. This will involve working on new products and enhancing current products from the basic science all the way through to the customers hands

Engineering Operations (EO) - Whitley or Gaydon
EO are at the heart of JLR Engineering. Involved at every stage of the engineering process, they underpin technical innovation and product delivery with programme management, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products. A diverse team, Engineering Operations harness a variety of skill sets, from project management, information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes.

You could find yourself working within our Digital Engineering, Operations or Test Operations Team. Dependant on the role you find yourself working in you could develop skills such as coding working with tools such as Java, Python, C++, Malab, database management, programming, project management, problem solving and data analysis.

Engineering Propulsion (EP) - Whitley or Gaydon
Our Propulsion Engineering team are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences that our customers will love for life. The scope of our propulsion systems is far-reaching and includes major commodity groups such as electric drive units, energy storage devices, engines, transmissions and drivelines, complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.

The Propulsion software engineering team is made up of a diverse set of skill sets ranging from control systems engineering, calibration engineering, integration engineering and data science to project management. As such, you will get the opportunity to work with and learn a variety of perspectives as you develop a wide range of skills related to using vehicle modelling and simulation to solving real-world engineering problems.

Your Education Provider
As part of your apprenticeship, you will study for a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions with the University of Warwick.

During your apprenticeship, you will study a range of modules designed to help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to thrive as a technology professional. You’ll contribute to the business in your assigned role, as well as undertake additional study in your own time, to achieve your academic award. A network of apprentice tutors and line managers will regularly review your progress and offer advice along the way, to support you in performing at your best.

Modules are taught in week-long blocks throughout the academic year by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), part of the University of Warwick. These will be a mix of lectures, practical laboratory assignments, seminars and tutorials delivered in person and online and you will also enjoy access to a virtual learning environment for further support.

In the final year, you will undertake a work-based project which also forms part of your End Point Assessment (EPA). On successful completion of your EPA, you will achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship, ready for an amazing career with JLR.
