Job description

Research Assistant
Applied Sciences
£30,766 - £37,442 per annum
Huddersfield
Fixed term for 24 months
37 hours per week
Ref: R7349

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant (RA) to join the Centre for Climate Resilient Societies (CRS) within the School of Applied Sciences and SURGE within Huddersfield Business School, at the University of Huddersfield. We have recently secured funding from the Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) to develop community-based monitoring and evaluation and improve market access for wild coffee and wild honey in southwest Ethiopia.

As a part of this funding, the CRS is seeking to hire an RA to contribute to the JOA-funded project named "FOREST CONSERVATION THROUGH TRACEABLE SUPPLY CHAIN DEVELOPMENT FOR WILD COFFEE AND FOREST HONEY." This role involves conducting field research in southwest Ethiopia and collaborating with our project partners, Ethio-Wetlands Natural Resources Association (EWNRA) and Bees for Development (BfD), to develop and implement monitoring and evaluation methods as well as improve value-chain strategies.

The work will entail field research, remote sensing/geographical information system (GIS), community engagement, and value-chain analysis to implement the monitoring, learning and evaluation to local communities and their forest conservation and improve the market access of their wild honey and coffee produce.

You will help review the available literature, design and develop methods, collect and analyse data, and generate academic outputs. The work will also involve collaborations with project partners in the UK and Ethiopia, so good communication skills will be essential and previous experience of liaising with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), in African contexts, will be an asset. You will hold a Masters and Doctoral Qualification or be working towards Doctoral Qualification in Environmental Sciences, Business, International Development or a related area, and the commitment to field research in rural Ethiopia is essential, as is an enquiring and creative approach to challenges.
