Lecturer in Mathematical Modelling
University of Southampton
Location
Southampton | United Kingdom
Job description
We invite applications for two Lectureships that will strengthen and expand our portfolio of Applied Mathematical Modelling and enhance our curriculum of research-led education. It is intended for the positions to start on 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible afterwards.
Lectureship focused on mathematical modelling for a sustainable future, with applications to energy, climate, biology, medicine, or the health sciences.
Lectureship focused on computational modelling of real-world systems, ideally with connection to the mathematics of data science and artificial intelligence.
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about research and education and pursue novel applications of mathematics that can make a real difference in the world. To support our research strategy, we place emphasis on growing our expertise in sustainable processes and computational modelling in a wide range of possible applications and contexts.
The Modelling Group within the School of Mathematical Sciences has had notable successes in many applications of mathematical methods and models to provide deep, quantitative understanding of problems in science, engineering, and medical sciences, from biology to sustainable energy. Members of the Group include Giampaolo d’Alessandro, Philip Greulich, Christopher Howls, Rebecca Hoyle, Carlos Lobo, Ben Macarthur, Giles Richardson, and Ruben Sanchez-Garcia. Current research aims to develop and apply new modelling techniques from scientific computing, asymptotic analysis, dynamical systems, stochastic processes, machine learning, and topology, to a wide range of real-world systems. We are looking for enterprising candidates who will support this strongly collaborative and interdisciplinary ethos.
The School of Mathematical Sciences and the Modelling Group offer a diverse and welcoming workplace at a world-leading University with a strong opportunity for engaging in multidisciplinary projects. We were very proud to have been awarded the Athena SWAN Silver award, and we are committed to the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion principles in all aspects of our work. We strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups. We recognise that colleagues may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability, or illness. The University has a generous maternity policy and onsite childcare facilities and offers a range of benefits designed to help maintain and support employees' well-being and work-life balance. The University of Southampton is committed to sustainability and being a globally responsible university and has been awarded the Platinum EcoAward.
Strong applicants should demonstrate:
a doctorate and postdoctoral experience in a relevant discipline
ability to obtain peer-reviewed funding
evidence of distinction in research through high-quality publications
ability for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion through new initiatives in research and education
