Salary: £24,514.56 - £25,882.56
Hours: 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 40 weeks a year
Job purpose
To be the lead science technician providing high quality technical support to the teaching staff and students in the science department. To lead the science technician team to maintain high quality teaching environments, set up practical sessions, maintain equipment, complete administrative tasks and manage stock levels. This is written at a specific time and is subject to change as the demands of the Collegiate and the role develops. The role requires flexibility and adaptability and the employees of the Collegiate need to be aware that they may be asked to perform tasks and be given responsibilities not detailed in this .
Duties and responsibilities
- Manage the support given to the science teaching staff.
- Assist with the teaching and learning process by being able to demonstrate the experiments/investigations to the students.
- Ensure the science graduate technician is trained in Health and Safety and day-to-day jobs within the technician room.
- Support the science graduate to prepare demonstrations/revision sessions to successfully support teaching staff.
- Provide support and training to science technicians on Health and Safety and preparation of solutions.
- Ensure maintenance of a healthy and safe working environment.
- Monitor number of Lab requisitions on the Lab Logger and work with the HOD to ensure that work is distributed within the technician team, so all tasks are completed to meet deadlines.
- Preparation of solutions, specimens and any other equipment for experimental work etc. as required by science staff.
- Preparing equipment ordered by science teachers.
- Ensure cleaning and maintenance of science equipment is carried out to the required standard.
- Ensure suitable materials are available and on hand, maintain stock levels including doing regular stock takes.
- Keeping track of orders and budgets as agreed with HOD.
- Safely dealing with breakages, stock shortages or equipment malfunction.
- Being aware of current requirements with respect to Health and Safety and keeping up to date with any new developments. Work proactively with the HOD to ensure all science staff are aware of any new guidance on Health and Safety.
- Liaison as required, through subject teachers, Sixth Form students about equipment needed for the internally assessed practical investigations.
- Assistance with preparations for Open Days, Easter and Summer Schools and attendance as necessary.
- Photocopying and collation of exam papers and worksheets as required for individual lessons.
- Filing of Science Department resources.
- You will be required to attend inset training days throughout the year, these are notified well in advance and may occur at the beginning or end of a holiday period, these are included in your salary.
