Job description
The School seeks to appoint a full-time teacher of French and Spanish from September 2024. For the right candidate there is the possibility that this appointment would include the responsibility of Head of Spanish.
This post comes with a generous package:
Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill in north-west London. The School is located on a 324-acre estate which encompasses much of Harrow on the Hill and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 837 boys study at Harrow and live in the School’s 12 boarding houses. Employees particularly value the School’s beautiful green estate, the positive working environment, and good relationships with colleagues.
The Modern Languages department is one of the largest and most successful departments in the School with very good results achieved in all languages at all levels. There are currently 26 members of staff supported by a secretary. Eleven of them are fulltime, six are part-time. In addition we have a French and a German language assistant, and there are seven teachers who offer language lessons off the timetable. The principal languages taught are French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Spanish, all to A Level. Other languages taught to various levels are Arabic, Modern Greek, and Polish. We also have a Dutch teacher and a Portuguese teacher on the books.
All boys start out with two languages in their first year at Harrow. At least one modern language is compulsory for all boys to GCSE with a good number of boys studying two or even more. There are approximately 160 boys in a year group, and usually some 50 boys pursue a modern language in each year of the Sixth Form. Boys are prepared for the Edexcel GCSE and A level qualifications. The department consistently delivers strong public examination results and offers a wide range of super[1]curricular academic enrichment, including trips and exchanges.
The successful applicant will teacher French and Spanish throughout the School. They will be expected to make an enthusiastic contribution to the work of the department and further the high profile of the department among Harrovians. They will contribute to the Super-Curriculum, which includes Electives, lectures and other academic extension, attend Chapel regularly and Speech Room (assembly) once weekly. They will also be a tutor in a House, supporting the House Master in the pastoral care of a group of boys, teach PSHEE to a tutor group and contribute to extra-curricular activities, which are an important part of boarding-school life.
Support and training to achieve Qualified Teacher Status can be offered if required. We occasionally appoint Masters with outstanding qualities and a good degree who do not have a formal teaching qualification.
