Family Counselling Trust
Location
Poundbury, Dorset | United Kingdom
Job description
Family Counselling Trust (FCT) is a small but expanding mental health charity in the South West which provides therapy & guidance to families (particularly low-income) with children/young people experiencing mental health issues.
What will you be doing? The Role: The primary role of the Chair is to lead and manage the FCT Board of Trustees in carrying out its three principal tasks: shaping the future of the Charity through the development of appropriate strategies and policies; ensuring its governance is robust; and monitoring the delivery of its services to ensure they are efficient and effective. This requires the Chair to liaise closely with the CEO in particular and, as appropriate, with county chairs and other trustees. The Chair, together with the President, is also the principal high-level representative of the Charity to a wider audience.
The Person: The core requirement for the FCT Chair is the ability to lead and manage a Board of trustees comprising a diverse range of talented individuals. This requires good intellectual, interpersonal and communication skills, an ability to think laterally and the resilience to drive change where necessary. While the Chair must clearly have a sound grasp of the work the Charity does, previous, direct experience of the mental health domain is not essential: there are others on the Board and within the organisation who have those skills. However, previous experience of the charitable sector more generally is extremely valuable in understanding issues of third sector governance.
The Commitment: The level of commitment is variable and will to a significant degree depend on how successful the Charity has been in manning key volunteer and executive posts. If there are strong teams in place the commitment is likely to be a few hours a week. If there are gaps that will increase as greater involvement becomes necessary.

What difference will you make?As Chair of Trustees, you will support and shape our work and strategic direction, as well as help us achieve our purpose to provide prompt psychological support to children, young people and their families who are experiencing early level mental health challenges, particularly those from low-income and marginalised households.
This is a vital role, helping ensure we can continue our support for children, young people and their families experiencing mental health difficulties below any statutory threshold. The Chair of Trustees is a key role in our organisation. Your leadership and commitment will ensure we continue to provide and extend our range of much-needed support and services to our beneficiaries.
