Job description

Electronics Engineer x2 - Loughborough

Are you an Electronics Design Engineer who is bored and unfulfilled in a large corporate environment ? You may be worried about the cyclical rationalisations impacting reduced headcount ? My client can offer an ambitious Electronics Engineer / Hardware Design Engineer Technical and Project variety, security, freedom, and where you can have a direct impact on the Products and the organisation.

The Electronics Design Engineer / Hardware Engineer position is a broad and varied R&D role and would suit someone with an interest or experience in Measurement Electronics and Physics. Some of the Products you would be working on are Measurement Instruments, Navigation, Imaging and Acoustic Sensors.

We require an Electronics Design Engineer who is familiar with Analogue and Digital Electronics Design to join the Product Development team in advancing their product portfolio and adding value. You should be able to design Analogue, Digital and Mixed-Signal Electronics Systems from Component Level, so you will need to be familiar with microcontrollers, op-amps, transistors, diodes, ADC, DAC, etc. Some exposure to embedded C on microcontrollers will be required. It is solving technical problems from Component to System level, efficiently generate commercially viable designs, with good engineering practices and accurate documentation.

My client develop, manufacture and supply underground geophysical surveying systems, intelligent data acquisition systems, including borehole loggers, geophysical logging probes, directional surveys (magnetometer and gyro based), down hole geophone (Vertical Seismic Profile), micro-seismic (P & S velocities), and imaging and well inspection cameras.

The company exports globally and has a strong reputation for manufacturing reliable and good quality systems. We have interesting upcoming projects and so are looking forward to welcoming qualified Electronics Design Engineers to the team.

The Hardware Design Engineer will be working with a wide variety of measurement technologies, from electrical resistivity, acoustic transmission and reflection, navigation / orientation using magnetometers, accelerometers and gyroscopes, video cameras, NMR, ionising radiation detectors, flowmeters, etc. The work will be mostly research and development, but there will also be support for legacy equipment, and modifications of existing designs to meet customer specifications.

As part of a small multidisciplinary team, you will be working alongside at least one other team member, but sometimes you will be working independently. Senior members of the team will aid and/or mentor you, so that in time, you will become largely autonomous. As you mature in the role, and as the company grows, there will be scope for career progression. There is potential to become specialised in your field of interest and perhaps become the go-to expert.

The ideal candidate will be somebody who enjoys a challenge, finds developing and commercialising new technologies satisfying, has a passion for making instrumentation systems, and is innovative. They hire on ability, attitude and aptitude with a big emphasis on potential rather than just past experience. They thrive on continuous product development, so there is always plenty to do.

Experience in the following is necessary:

• Analogue, Digital, and Mixed-Signal Electronics.

• Microcontroller Embedded Systems, typically PIC-based, and programmed in C.

It would be a bonus if you have any experience in the following:

• Instrumentation design.

• Design of electronics to operate at high temperatures.

• Design of switched mode and linear power supplies.

• Transformer design and drawing specifications.

• Power supplies generating up to 4kV.

• FPGA programming.

• Control of small motors.

• Signal processing.

The organisation is stable, well established, successful, with high staff retention. The company treats employees as individuals, has a great relaxed culture with flexible working, varied projects, and a commitment to learning & development.
