Clinical Fellow in Uro-Oncology | The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust

Location

Sutton, Greater London | United Kingdom

Job description

The Uro-Oncology Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital at Sutton treats patients with prostate, bladder, testicular and penile cancers. It has a large NHS referral practice and comprehensive research programmes in the treatment of localised and metastatic disease. The Unit’s Consultants Prof R Huddart, Prof C Parker, Dr A Tree, Dr A Reid, Dr J Murray, Dr S Hafeez and Dr A Pathmanathan are recognised national/international opinion leaders. The Unit has a particular interest in the development of advanced radiotherapy techniques.

The post will be suitable for trainees in either clinical or medical oncology. The applicant will require GMC registration.

This post would commence ASAP.

The contract will be offered initially for a fixed term of 1 year and may be extended if desired by both parties.

This appointment is for a one year clinical fellowship to care for patients in our clinics and to contribute to radiotherapy planning and delivery (for radiation/clinical oncology applicants) and/or systemic therapy management and research. The successful applicant will participate in consultant-led clinics most days, gaining a broad specialist experience in prostate, bladder and testis cancer. Most clinics occur at the Royal Marsden Sutton, but the post-holder may be asked to also attend satellite clinics at local hospitals.

Specialist training is offered in radiotherapy contouring, including the opportunity to learn online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy for interested candidates. Due to our large clinical trial portfolio (both systemic therapy and radiotherapy trials) we can also offer experience and training in clinical trial implementation and management.

The post holder will be based in the Royal Marsden hospital in Sutton unit.

The post holder is expected to be a medically qualified doctor with experience in oncology. For clinical/radiation oncology candidates FRCR (or equivalent) is preferred but not mandatory.

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is a world-leading cancer centre. Our role is to offer our patients the best cancer care available anywhere in the world, and to continue to make a global contribution to finding better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer. We employ over 3,900 staff in a diverse range of careers including nursing, medical, science, radiography, pharmacy, occupational therapy, finance and administrative services. We have two hospitals – one in Chelsea, London, and one in Sutton, Surrey – as well as a Medical Daycare Unit in Kingston Hospital

At The Royal Marsden, we deal with cancer every day, so we understand how valuable life is. When people entrust their lives to us, they have the right to demand the very best. That's why the pursuit of excellence lies at the heart of everything we do.

At the heart of the hospital is our dedicated team. We offer a stimulating and dynamic working environment, a wide range of staff benefits and learning and development opportunities. We are looking for employees who aspire to excellence, share our values and can play a crucial role in our on-going achievements.

The post holder will be expected to support the clinical and research activities of the unit including clinical trial work. In addition, the post holder can expect to develop the following skills:
• Higher level site specialist experience. The Unit’s Consultants treat patients with urological cancer (prostate, bladder, testicular, penile). The large clinical practice gives broad experience in both local and systemic treatment approaches in each tumour type. This provides an ideal background to further develop the appointee’s clinical experience that will enable them to be well placed to develop as an independent practitioner in their chosen area.
• Training in technologically advanced radiotherapy techniques (for clinical oncology applicants). The unit is committed to the development and implementation of the latest radiotherapy techniques and their evaluation and provides an unrivalled opportunity to develop skills in this area. Clinical oncology applicants will be given training in radiotherapy contouring, and plan assessment, as well as the opportunity to learn online adaptive recontouring on the MR linac.
• Clinical research. The Unit is actively involved in a large number of national and local clinical trial protocols frequently as national or international chief investigator. Although this is primarily a clinical post in terms of workload, the appointee will be encouraged to actively participate in this research, develop clinical research projects and there are many opportunities to publish peer-reviewed articles during this fellowship.
• The post includes formal educational opportunities alongside our specialist trainees, including journal clubs, seminars and formal lectures.
