Post Title: Senior Clinical Academic Fellow (SCAF)/Senior Research Fellow (SRF)
SBU/Department: School of Health and Social Work

FTE: 0.5 fte working (17.5 hours per week)
Duration of Contract: Fixed Term Contract (2 years)
Salary: UH8 £44,263pa with potential to progress to £56,021pa by annual increments on achieving designated skills and experience. Pro rata for part time.
Annual Leave: 35 days pro rata plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced researcher/clinical academic to join a vibrant team working in Nursing, Health and Wellbeing (NHW), within the new Centre for Applied Clinical, Health and Care Research [CACHE]). You would help foster a vibrant research culture focused on research applied to clinical practice. This is an exciting opportunity to join a successful research team with an established track record in research in this area.
You will be based within School of Health and Social Work, which is a vibrant, multidisciplinary school, with over 30 researchers from diverse backgrounds including nursing, social work and mental health.

This post would be ideal for someone with research experience in a hospital setting keen to develop a range of research skills in qualitative and mixed methods. For the SCAF role, you would have a clinical qualification. Research across a range of projects brings together senior researchers from in different fields of nursing, and allied professions with expertise in health services research, realist evaluation, involvement/engagement in research, qualitative and mixed methods research. Specific areas include critical care (Prof Natalie Pattison’s programme of research), staffing, learning disabilities, paediatrics/neonates (Associate Prof Lisa Whiting), and community nursing/midwifery (Assoc Profs Julia Petty/Laura Abbott). The appointee would have the opportunity to work with a range of senior academics and researchers who are experts in their field.

Main duties and responsibilities
The successful applicant will work closely with the Professor of Clinical Nursing/Principal Investigator to carry out varied aspects of the research programme in one site and liaise with researchers at two other sites. The Senior Clinical Academic Fellow (SCAF)/Senior Research Fellow (SRF) post will undertake research and establish a programme of research activity, and support research teams in achieving project milestones. You will look for funding opportunities, convene project management groups to prepare bids, attend project meetings, share the findings and disseminate project outcomes. The successful post-holder will also take an active part in the academic life of the School as required.

Fundamental to the role will be the ability to manage relationships with external stakeholders and research participants. Supervision of doctoral/masters students and research assistants is likely to be required as part of this role.

Travel within Hertfordshire and occasional external meetings may be expected. Travel to data collection sites across the UK may also be required, so willingness to travel is essential.

Skills and experience required
The post would suit a post-graduate with research experience with an understanding of healthcare and hospital settings. Candidates will have experience in qualitative and mixed methods research methodology.

Senior Clinical Academic Fellow post will be doctorally-prepared (or near to PhD completion), able to demonstrate their clinical acumen, and have a record of scholarly published work in peer-reviewed journals. They are expected to be organised, capable of using their own initiative, able to work well in a team and be sensitive to the needs of the research participants.

The Senior Research Fellow post, the candidate will be doctorally-prepared, and have a record of scholarly published work in peer-reviewed journals. Fundamental to the role will be the ability to manage relationships with external stakeholders and research participants. Supervision of doctoral/masters students and research assistants is likely to be required as part of this role.

Experience in developing clinical knowledge in a specialist area (through education programmes, research or service improvement activity) is essential for this role, as is the ability to plan and manage own activities effectively. Established clinical or research academic partnerships with organisations and experience of public involvement/engagement activity are desirable.

Qualifications required
You will hold a good undergraduate honours degree in a relevant discipline, a PhD (or be near completion, details to be provided on progress by applicant if not yet completed PhD) or equivalent and ideally have clinical experience as a registered health professional.
For the SCAF role a clinical qualification is needed.
