Process Safety Engineer

Location: Yorkshire region base with regular regional travel, 1-2 days in the office / site per week
Work type: Permanent. 37 hours per week, Monday – Friday

The Asset Delivery team are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.
The Process Safety team are a small team with big ambitions to grow! Process Safety is paramount to Yorkshire Water covering a variety of assets across clean water, wastewater and our Bioresources. Covering chemical storage and use, digestion processes, power generation and gas to grid.
Where you fit in:
- The Process Safety Engineer will support the Engineering Process Safety Team to provide strategic direction, for the delivery of key process safety and sustainability improvement objectives to establish a documented level of asset integrity within Yorkshire Water
- The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for identifying and mitigating significant asset integrity risks across a wide asset group, eg. digestion plants, chemical processes, steam generation etc
- The Process Safety Engineer will be responsible for conducting investigations and completion of remedial solutions working with internal and external colleagues to ensure all work is completed to high standards and that the process safety risks factors have been fully accounted for. This role will also provide technical support for operations in their field of expertise
- The role will provide support to the Process Safety Team and wider personnel comprising technical specialists, construction leaders, operators, inspection, and process safety engineers. This includes a wider, multi-disciplined contract resource involved in the investigation and inspection of Yorkshire Water assets
- The Process Safety Engineer will be the project lead on streams within the Process Safety Workload, with a primary focus on the identification and mitigation of significant process safety risks
- You will provide engineering standards support to the ICA Principal Engineers in way of the development of the Engineering Specifications, WIMES and design guidance
- You will provide coaching and mentoring to team members to support the transfer of specialist knowledge and succession planning within Yorkshire Water.
What skills & qualifications you will need:
- Chartered Engineer with a degree level qualification (or equivalent) in engineering or a chemical discipline
- It is essential to have proven experience of engineering project delivery
- Knowledge of high hazard plant environment and Health and Safety regulations such as COMAH and DSEAR
- Knowledge of Process Safety Management principles (e.g. HAZOP, LOPA, Inspection Standards (API, EEMUA), Pressure Relief Studies etc, and other risk identification studies)
- Experience in identifying practical/innovative solutions to ensure the risks from a process plant are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) with the ability to apply cost-benefit analysis where appropriate
- Knowledge and ability to deliver a full Root Cause Analysis Investigation (RCA) following incidents and failures of process equipment and assets
- Knowledge of Management of Change (MoC) procedure in permanent and temporary changes to assets, plant, and equipment
- Ability to understand and practically discuss the relevant aspects of technical and process safety related investigations and documentation i.e. Engineering Risk Assessment/Safety Reviews, Functional Design Specifications, Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Electrical/Loop drawings etc
- You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to understand complex technical concepts
- Ability to influence people across multifunctional teams throughout the business
- Ability to engage with customers internally and externally, developing and maintaining positive business relationships in order to understand their needs and recognise opportunities
- Proficient in the use of corporate IT Computer Systems e.g. SAP
- A full, valid driving licence (with no more than 6 points) is required for the role
You will also benefit from having:
- Familiarity of internal business Control of Work policies and procedures. This includes ensuring the availability, isolation and access of plant and equipment (e.g. confined space entry, hot work etc)
- Asset management experience within an engineering or process related industry
- A strong attention to detail
- Ideally, you will have a membership (or working towards membership) of a recognised Engineering Institution at Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status
We embrace a flexible working model, where our hybrid setup typically requires an average of 1-2 days in the office / on-site per week. This could be slightly more when collaborative efforts, training or meeting deadlines demand it. For those who prefer to work on-site, our office is open Monday-Friday during working hours.
