NW Surrey Samaritans is looking for a Treasurer to manage all aspects of the finances of the branch

Please note this is a support role – the treasurer will not be to respond to callers.

What will you be doing?

1. Background to the NW Surrey Branch

The branch was formed in 1964 and is based in Charities House, Walton-on Thames.  We are one of 200 Samaritans branches in the UK and Ireland.  We currently have approximately 100 volunteers who between them respond to more than 15,000 calls and emails each year. The branch is self-financing with an annual turnover of around £20,000.

Our current treasurer is stepping down having been in office for eight years, but will continue to provide support to the new incumbent during a handover period.  Please note that this is a support role – the role does not require the treasurer to respond to callers.

1. Treasurer’s Duties

• Maintain financial records
• Support the Branch Director and leadership team in financial decision making
• Monitor financial performance of the branch

• Manage bank account and payments
• Produce monthly management accounts
• Prepare annual budget
• Monthly financial reporting to Samaritans Central Charity
• Oversee cash collection procedures for fundraising events
• Participate in the Branch Leadership Group (BLG): 6-8 people meeting every 6 weeks

1. Core Skills Required

• Commitment to Samaritans goal of preventing death by suicide
• Proven financial experience tho’ an accountancy qualification is not essential
• Competency in Excel
• Self-motivated and ability to work independently
• Good, independent judgement and the ability to articulate this to other members of the BLG
• Ability to work effectively with others as a member of the BLG

What are we looking for?

An accountancy qualification isn't essential, but the Treasurer should proven financial management experience and competence in Excel

What difference will you make?

As part of the leadership group, the Treasurer will have an important role to play in safeguarding the financial viability of the branch
