Office/Lab Based Position - Cambridge, UK

Your role in our team:

You will be a pivotal member of the Facilities team who combines managerial skills and knowledge of safety and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) to ensure effective laboratory operations while maintaining high levels of safety, quality and service.

The primary focus of this role is to provide leadership and direction to the Laboratory Support team to ensure laboratory space, equipment and consumables are kept clean, in safe working condition and adequately stocked and resourced to maximise productivity and minimise delays for the scientific teams (both Production and Research Scientists).

Your key responsibilities will include:

Lab Management:
To supervise and direct a small team of Laboratory Support Technicians.
Promote a proactive, continual improvement culture and systems to maintain high standards of service and good lab practices.
Establish strong relationships with the laboratory teams in order to understand and support their workload, challenges and constraints.
Ensure the laboratory is adequately stocked with consumables, reagents and in-house aliquots (prepared by Laboratory Support) through stock management.
In absence of Facilities Coordinator, ensure all equipment/instrumentation is properly maintained, trouble assessed and serviced complying with regulatory standards and ensuring proper performance and function.

Health & Safety:
Managerial duties involve working towards the implementation of Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety (QEHS) Management Systems within the laboratory environment.
Ensure the laboratory environment meets all regulatory, QEHS policies and procedures such that employees, visitors and the environment are protected from significant risk. This includes identifying, reporting and correcting QEHS deviations/failures as they occur in conjunction with Laboratory Captains.
Continue to develop effective health and safety policies and procedures and carry out risk assessments
Assist employees with the completion of risk assessments, COSHH forms and SOPs.
Champion Health & Safety (H&S) awareness across the science and laboratory functions and be an active member of the H&S Committee.
Act as Safety Representative and be willing to take on other safety roles (e.g. Fire Warden, first aider, COSHH assessor) as required.

You…
Have a Bachelors’ degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience.
Have a laboratory safety qualification (IOSH or NEBOSH).
Are highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities and to tight timescales.
Are an excellent communicator with significant experience of managing a laboratory team.

With essential experience in…
Demonstrable experience in a laboratory management role in a biotech and/or pharmaceutical company environment including experience of working in a cell culture lab.
Have proven experience within a commercial laboratory environment.
Practical experience with a broad range of laboratory equipment.
Working to GLP guidelines.
Providing training to laboratory staff.
An understanding of the interface/cross over between R&D and manufacturing.

Experience of working to QESH and/or ISO9001 standards.
Experience working as a Safety Co-ordinator within a research laboratory environment.
Experience of working to GMP guidelines.
Experience of acting as a Biological Safety Officer is desirable.
