Scope of the Role
Forming part of the core technical team within a growing custom battery manufacturer, you will work across battery pack conceptualisation, technical proposal creation & development and project delivery.
Custom portable power solutions are a developing area of technology with several unique technical challenges, this isn’t a typical “business as usual” role. You will be working with new technology, which is increasingly important in the current global climate, working with state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery cells, innovative mechanical and thermal management solutions.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The below list is not exhaustive, but the main duties and responsibilities will be:
- Work with Sales, Marketing, Principal Design Engineer, and Engineering to interpret customer requirements, define product specifications and write commercial customer proposals for new projects.
- Generate initial compliance matrices against customer requirements.
- Generate concept models to customer specifications.
- Liaise with Purchasing to create initial Bills of Materials for costing and manufacturing purposes.
- Provide technical input into product manuals and data sheets.
- Review and check vendor documentation for mechanical & electronic compliance with project specifications while considering commercial requirements.
- Ensure design risks are considered and input to design risk assessments. Communicate residual design risks to others.
- Develop and maintain relationships with relevant technical consultants and suppliers.
- Develop and maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that the business stream is at the forefront of the industry.
- Support battery design during New Product Introduction process where required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours
The postholder will possess a range of the following knowledge, skills, and behaviours:
- Degree in Mechanical Design Engineering or equivalent qualification
- Experience working on electrical systems
- Experience taking a commercially aware approach to technical problem solving.
- Experience with SolidWorks 2002 professional modelling software.
- Mechanical design experience working with electrical systems – batteries would be ideal but not a must.
- Experience with collaboration and building relationships with customers, suppliers, engineers, and project teams to deliver cost effective and acceptable engineering solutions.
- General understanding of codes of practice and other regulatory material, not necessarily industry specific.
- Possess the ability to look beyond the immediate design task to see how design decisions interact with the complete system.
- Detail oriented with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Lateral thinking with the ability to provide realistic and innovative design solutions.
