Our client is an independent environmental funder based in Oxfordshire. Since its inceptions, it has disbursed more than £2.8 million in grants to fund over 390 high-impact, locally led projects across Oxfordshire, supporting biodiversity, access to green spaces and the low carbon agenda.

It has been successful in raising funds from a range of sources including the Landfill Communities Fund, local authorities, charitable trusts and the corporate sector. In recent years, however, a significant opportunity has arisen around biodiversity offsetting, with the organization going through significant and rapid growth as a result. Biodiversity Net Gain is a new mechanism through which developers are required to leave biodiversity in a better state after a development than beforehand. Where the required biodiversity uplift cannot be delivered on site, our client takes payments from developers and uses these funds to support delivery of off-site Biodiversity Net Gain projects. These projects are delivered in partnership with a wide range of institutional, estate and private landowners.

They now seek a new Head of Finance and Operations (c28 hours/week negotiable) and envisage 2 days in the office every week. This role will play a central role in helping the organization navigate this period of change, managing evolving risks and delivering impact against its charitable aims.

Main duties:

• Take responsibility for the management of the charity's finances, including development of its financial systems, processes and policies.
• Lead on strategic financial planning, working closely with the CEO to ensure the organisation’s core strategic aims are translated into multi-year operational plans.
• Support the development of the charity's commercial activities, working closely with the Head of Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital to deliver operating models that are commercially successful while being in line with its charitable aims.
• Lead on organisational reporting, coordinating monthly, quarterly and annual reporting to internal and external stakeholders, including the Charity Commission.
• Lead on organisational systems development, working to support the broader team to develop the systems and processes required to collate and analyse data required for external reporting and/or internal monitoring against strategic goals.
• Support effective governance of the organisation, acting as Company Secretary to the Board of Trustees and coordinating the annual statutory audit.
• Oversee organisational risk management, developing better systems to prioritise, monitor and act against risks arising from the organisation’s work.
• Manage other core operational functions (human resources, procurement, IT, office management etc).

Experience of financial management, preferably in a senior management capacity, in either a third sector or commercial setting is required, as is previous management accounting (and interpretation experience) and previous use of software ideally Xero and Excel. You must also have managed people, projects and programmes. A relevant accounting qualification or equivalent is required.
