Job description
Origin has created a new role and is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Stock Controller to join our team in Porthleven, Cornwall. Reporting directly to the Head of Operations, the Stock Controller will be responsible for overseeing inventory management, optimising stock levels, and ensuring accurate stock records. Additionally, the Stock Controller will act as the line manager for a Junior Buyer, providing guidance and support in procurement activities to support all channels of our omnichannel business. This role requires strong organisational skills, excellent communication abilities, and a keen understanding of inventory control principles.
The main areas of responsibility are
Stock control management
- Oversee inventory levels to meet operational needs while minimising excess stock and wastage.
- Develop and implement stock control procedures and best practices for efficiency and accuracy.
- Coordinate with all relevant departments to forecast stock requirements and address inventory issues.
- Forecast inventory in sync with promotional activities and content calendar.
- Align inventory levels with anticipated demand spikes during promotions.
- Conduct regular stock audits and reconciliations to maintain data integrity.
Supplier coordination
- Supporting the junior buyer to liaise with suppliers and ensure orders, deliveries, and timely replenishment of stock are well managed.
- Assess and compare offers from various suppliers.
- Maintain strong supplier relationships and negotiate favourable terms to optimise stock levels, cost-effectiveness and quality.
Quality Assurance
- Scrutinise purchased products to uphold manufacturer commitments and quality standards.
- Address any deviations promptly to maintain customer satisfaction.
Team leadership and development
- Provide leadership, management, and guidance to the Junior Buyer, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration.
- Manage the Junior Buyer to enhance team skills and effectiveness.
- Train and mentor cross-department employees on inventory procedures and systems usage.
Financial oversight
- Monitor stock performance, variances, and inventory KPIs, providing regular reports and analysis to senior management and the board.
- Conduct frequent margin analyses to meet contribution margin targets.
- Ensure products are priced competitively while maintaining profitability.
- Regularly update cost prices and recommended retail prices (RRP) on Shopify and Unleashed (inventory system) platforms.
- Monitor pricing consistency across platforms to maintain competitiveness.
- Ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards in stock handling and storage.
Forecasting and analysis
- Anticipate supply and demand fluctuations to prevent excess inventory and stockouts.
- Generate comprehensive reports on purchases, including detailed cost analysis.
- Utilise insights to identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
- Enter purchase details into the inventory management system (Unleashed) and maintain accurate stock records.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to streamline procurement processes and enhance supply chain efficiency.

- Staying updated on industry trends, inventory management best practices, and technological advancements enables ongoing improvement and innovation in stock control processes.
Essential qualities to have
- Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field preferred.
- Proven experience in inventory management or stock control, preferably in the food and beverage industry.
- Experience with Lean including 5S, Kaisen, Kanban and Value Stream Mapping and other operational efficiency practices.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Excellent organisational and time-management abilities with a keen attention to detail.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and lead a team.
- Proficiency in inventory management software and Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Knowledge of procurement processes, supplier management, and negotiation techniques.
- Understanding of warehouse operations, stock-keeping methods, and inventory control principles.
- Familiarity with food safety regulations, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
- Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable qualities to have
- Understanding of the speciality coffee industry.
- CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply) qualified.
- Experience using Unleashed, Xero or other cloud-based business management systems.
- Knowledge of EU/UK Procurement Policies, Procedures and Processes as well as eSourcing tools.
Benefits
Competitive Salary
£30,000 FTE per annum.
