Ocean Census’ mission is to accelerate the discovery of ocean life and catalyse its protection for future generations.
Launched in April 2023 by The Nippon Foundation and Nekton Foundation, Ocean Census is the largest programme in history to discover life in our ocean, heralding a new era of pioneering research and scientific exploration to accelerate species discovery and protection.
Our Alliance is key to our success. Together with global partners, we’re combating the critical knowledge gap surrounding the diversity and distribution of marine life, by embracing cyber-taxonomy and merging traditional methods with cutting edge science including DNA sequencing, high-resolution digital imaging, and machine learning.
And we’ve set ourselves an ambitious target – our goal is to discover 100,000 new species within the coming decade and inspire people around the globe.
THE ROLE
Ocean Census is actively searching for a highly skilled and innovative Senior Multimedia Content Creator to join our team. This pivotal role involves filming during expeditions and editing professional-quality video content for distribution via news outlets and digital platforms. The successful candidate will possess a blend of strong news and social media editorial judgement, creativity, technical expertise, and a passion for storytelling.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for an individual with a proven track record as a one-person video journalist, demonstrating creativity, strong communication skills, and the ability to work well under pressure in challenging environments. The ideal candidate will bring originality and flair to content creation, confident at interviewing and writing scripts, backed by expert knowledge of cameras, digital imaging, and the latest content creation technologies.
DETAILS
Start: April/May 2024
Location: UK based only, hybrid working including c. 2 days a week at Oxford area HQ.
Salary: £40k-£45k per annum, based on qualifications, skills and experience
Contract: 2-year fixed term, with a view to extend.
Hours: Full time / 5 days per week

Working with Communications team, external partners, and freelancers
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
- Advanced Content Creation: Craft high-quality, compelling, and engaging content across various platforms to drive engagement and resonate with the target audience (priority task).
- Filming and Editing: Capture high-quality footage and perform meticulous editing, utilising the latest techniques and technologies to produce professional-grade visual content (priority task).
- Participating on Expeditions: Engage in expeditions to film and edit content for distribution to news and social media (priority task).
- Post-Production: Manage post-production processes to enhance the visual and auditory appeal of the content
- News Research: Conduct in-depth research, including interviews and field research, to gather accurate and relevant information for content creation and production planning
- Conceptualising and Planning: Generate innovative concepts for content that are purposeful and impactful.
- Storyboarding: Create detailed storyboards, collaborating closely with partners and external freelancers to align with the project's vision.
- Strategy Development: Collaborate in developing and refining content strategies, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and audience needs.
- Scriptwriting: Work closely with the Head of Communications to write, refine, and perfect scripts.
- Quality Control: Implement quality control measures throughout the content creation process to meet organisational standards.
KEY ATTRIBUTES
Essential:
- Strong track history of filming and editing as a one person video journalist, such as EPK (Electronic Press Kit) & BTS (Behind The Scenes) pieces.
- Ability to produce a variety of content with originality and flair, strong writing and visual style development skills.
- Excellent communication skills to direct teams, instruct presenters, and produce contributors effectively.
- Proficient in managing multiple tasks simultaneously, including operating cameras and ensuring safety.
- Knowledge of cameras, file formats, storage media, and the latest technology in digital imaging, sound recording, data wrangling, and DIT skills.
- Experience with digital cameras on drones, Osmo, and GoPro mounts is essential.
- Strong sense of what is news-worthy (for news distribution) and engaging for social media
- Strong understanding of composition, light, colour, texture, focus, and framing.
- Ability to work safely and autonomously in challenging environments.
Desirable:
- Experience working on at-sea expeditions.
