In your role as Deputy Manager you will assist the Nursery Manager in the daily management of the nursery. You will assist the manager in ensuring that all legislation in relation to registration with regulatory bodies; special needs; child protection and Health and Safety is complied with and that company policies and procedures are adhered to. In the absence of the manager you will be expected to undertake the overall day-to-day management of the nursery in conjunction with the Assistant Manager and have overall responsibility of the setting, reporting to the senior management team when necessary.
You will also be responsible for the day-to-day management of your room as a team leader, ensuring that all children in your care receive a rich and stimulating play experience.

Key Responsibilities
Childcare & Education
- Lead the team within your room and implement the Early years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum
- Provide a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care
- Ensure the standards of environment, resources and experiences offered to children are of the highest standard.
- Lead planning for the EYFS and ensure rich and diverse outdoor play experiences are offered
- Maintain accurate and effective children’s records
- Promote and facilitate partnership with parents/carers and other family members
- Assist the manager with the implementation of administrative procedures involved with registration, place allocation and other related matters
- Ensure that the induction process for new children is effective and adapted to suit the child and the parents
- Support the development of good practice with regard to special needs and inclusion
- Ensure that children are kept safe and your team understands Child protection procedures
- Ensure the nutritional needs of children are met & Food Safety Regulations are complied with.
- Develop and maintain professional working relationships with advisory teachers, schools, health professionals and local Sure Start programmes as appropriate.
- Comply with the statutory framework for the EYFS, Child Protection Procedures, relevant legislation including the Children Act 1989 and 2004.
- Develop and maintain highly professional working relationships with relevant Local Authority Departments, regulatory bodies and other agencies.
- Remain abreast of current developments in childcare and education policy and practice.
- Ensure the effective implementation of key person procedures within your room and be a key person carrying out all related responsibilities in building relationships with children and their families
- Ensure the smooth transition of the children to the next room and involve parents/carers in the timing
- Ensure children spend as much time as possible outside in the fresh air
Health and Safety
- Undertake a shared responsibility for health, safety and cleanliness throughout the nursery
- Ensure the general cleanliness of the children at all times
- Be fully aware of all emergency and security procedures e.g. fire precautions, security, dropping off and collection of children
- Operate the highest standard of hygiene and cleanliness particularly in the bedding and nappy changing area and food surface areas
- Implement Health and Safety polices with in the nursery. To audit, evaluate and manage risk and ensure that any actions are passed to staff and implemented immediately.
- Be responsible for ensuring the nursery remains compliant in regards to suitably trained staff with relevant first aid qualifications.
- Assist in maintaining the nursery buildings, resources and equipment to a high standard reporting maintenance or cleaning issues appropriately and promptly.
Operational
- Promote the nursery to current parents and potential customers
- Support the manager and staff during regulatory inspections and to assist in the implementation of any recommendations
- Be reflective about own leadership role to ensure that the process of self improvement is continuous and enhances performance.
Financial
- Assist the manager in monitoring petty cash and other budgets and maintaining petty cash systems.
- Assist the manager with the collection and recording of fees.
Staff
- Assist the manager with the recruitment, teambuilding and training of staff
- Act as a role model to other staff, demonstrating good practice and motivating and inspiring the staff team
- Support and supervise room staff with their day to day duties
- Ensure that new staff have a meaningful induction
- Support staff access training and personal and professional development
- Support and mentor staff and students
- Work with other room leaders to ensure a consistent approach
- Be responsible for participating in all self-development activities including appraisals, supervisions and observations and be responsible for the updating of their Personal Development Plans (PDP’s)
- Assist with planning and organisation of staffing schedules and holiday rota’s to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained in accordance with the statutory framework
- Ensure time is used effectively, demonstrate good time management prioritising for self and others.
- Support and motivate all staff to ensure they feel included, responsible, optimising their performance to engage in a good staff team.
Communication
- Develop and promote parental partnership and involvement.
- Ensure good communication between all users of the nursery.
- Maintain communication links with outside agencies.
- Assist the manager with the co-ordination of regular staff meetings, planning meetings and parents meetings and other events including organising agendas and minutes.
General
- Assist the manager with administrative duties associated with the management of the facility, such as maintaining records on children and families, ordering equipment, maintaining inventories and keeping personnel records.
- Use the computer effectively for storing information through the nursery software system.
- Undertake other duties as reasonably requested by the manager
- Conduct parent show arounds when needed and be confident when dealing with parent concerns
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Be prepared to undertake additional training and qualifications
- Attend and be involved with, out of working hours activities, e.g. training, parents’ meetings, open days, children’s Christmas party and regular planning/staff meetings.
- Undertake certain domestic jobs within the Nursery, e.g. preparation of snack meals, cleansing of equipment and other such duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature as may be determined from time to time by the manager.

Essential Criteria
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Relevant Experience
A minimum of 4 years post qualifying experience in a full day care setting
A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a supervisory role in a nursery
Experience of leading and supporting staff teams to improve practice
Education and Training
A Childcare and Education qualification equivalent to NVQ level 3
A higher level qualification in Early Years Childcare and Education / Childhood Studies
Knowledge
A sound knowledge of child development for children from birth to five years
An understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum
An understanding of a play based approach to children’s learning and development and the importance of outdoor play
Knowledge and understanding of the statutory framework for the EYFS and the inspection processes of regulatory bodies
Knowledge and understanding of the key legislation related to childcare and education
Sound understanding of the Key Person role
A sound knowledge of child protection
Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills, written & verbal
Ability to develop effective relationships with colleagues, parents and outside agencies
Effective leadership skills
The ability to plan and organise workload
Ability to present clear and accurate reports
Proficient with computers and software packages
