Job description


This post is focused on change management to ensure the continued implementation and development of an acute oncology service at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder will work with the other Acute Oncology CNS and play a key role in developing the service and monitoring its impact using a number of key metrics.

The post holder will give advice and implement patient care in an area which requires specific knowledge, skills and experience. The post holder will work alongside other clinical colleagues in oncology, palliative care, ED, acute medicine, radiology and pathology to ensure quality of care to the patients is maximised. This will include working with others in the development and delivery of network agreed guidelines and education programmes.

The post holder will
• Safer and better quality of care to patients with complications of chemotherapy and radiotherapy (early recognition, better treatment, early discharge).
• Review of patients with complications of cancer, rapid referral back to specialist teams.
• Appropriate investigation of patients who might benefit from treatment for unknown primary cancers (targeted investigations, rapid triage of patients into specialist oncology or palliative care services).
• This is a development role to support the successful post holder on the completion of their non-medical prescribing, university accredited acute oncology module and a university accredited clinical assessment and examination module.
• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised programmes of specialist evidence based nursing for acute oncology & haematology patients and their families utilising theagreed assessment tools in collaboration with other keyprofessionals.
• To have a presence in the emergency departments, out-patient department, hospital wards and primary care settings offering direct care to patients regarding acute oncology issues.
• Responsible for the safe and effective care of acute oncology & haematology patients by effective assessment of complex needs which may require specialist intervention.
• To maintain precise nursing documentation relating to patient care and ensure that all clinical and legal documents completed are both accurate and legible and maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Maintain own personal development to meet the requirements of the service.
• Provide education around acute oncology emergencies to AHP’s and support with the education and training programme for medical students and/or junior doctors.

ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
• Be able to work autonomously, prioritise and organise own specialist workload.
• Be able to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and adapt to the role of mediator/ protagonist to improve service provision.
• Help with the development and training needs of student and/ or other members of staff or general public.
• Be aware of legislation/ DOH white papers/ local and national cancer strategies and their effect on service provision for acute oncology & haematology patients and their families.
• Be aware of budgetary controls and ensure the economical use of resources, supplies and equipment.
• Be flexible and aware of the need to cover clinics/ colleagues/ services within the acute oncology team across East Lancashire Hospitals Trust.
• Ensure all patients have Holistic Needs Assessments, Information Prescriptions and Treatment Summaries at all key stages of their clinical pathway.
• Participate in and undertake clinical audit to aid service development.
• Take responsibility for own professional growth and keep up to date with professional developments and research.
• Participate in the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and policies with other members of the team and review them on a regular basis.
