Job Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director and Head of Innovation and Enterprises, you will play a key role in the Innovations team, shaping a suite of exciting new activities, including the development of an entrepreneurship training and mentorship programme, as well as funding calls to expand the NIHR’s offer to industry and accelerate the translation of research to generate patient benefit.
You will be an experienced manager leading a team of both Senior & Programme Managers to ensure the day-to-day delivery of all aspects of translational funding. This includes engagement with key external (and internal) stakeholders, the commissioning of new activities and funding calls, effective management of a portfolio of funded proposals and the capture of key outputs and impact metrics on delivering innovations to the NHS, care system, and the UK economy.
You will work closely with the Assistant Directors of Innovations and the Head of Business Development to develop and deliver the strategic aims of the programme.
You will have an excellent understanding of the UK health innovation ecosystem and an appreciation of current and evolving technology developments and commercial exploitation routes. You will act as an ambassador for our funding programmes, representing and promoting them externally to a wide variety of stakeholders, with a particular focus on engaging with industry.
The role will be based in Twickenham with a flexible arrangement of home and office work.
The LGC GMG Innovations team manages multiple funding programmes from several clients, including the NIHR i4i Programme and the SBRI Healthcare and NHS Cancer Programmes .
The NIHR Coordinating Centre Business Development team helps industry (from SMEs to large multinationals; across a range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, IVD and digital technology), charity and public research funders, to work in partnership with the NIHR and the wider UK research and healthcare community to conduct research and to facilitate regulatory approval, market entry and adoption into the NHS, the UK and other global healthcare markets.
Key responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this role focus on overseeing the delivery of the programme operations, portfolio management & analysis, communications, stakeholder engagement, and leading strategic initiatives for programme development & staff management. The following activities are key to delivering the Programme Lead role effectively:
Programme operations
- Championing the developing of implementation of the new initiatives in collaborations with other teams within the NIHR and consultation with innovators and researchers and ensuring relevant approval
- Supporting the annual strategic and operational business planning process and timely reporting to the client
- Overseeing the timely and effective delivery of competition delivery, due diligence and contracting of awarded proposals, and monitoring and post-close monitoring of the programme portfolio
- Managing the financial reporting and forecasting with the finance team, including ratification papers
- Identify synergies that can be created across the different programmes and drive continuous improvement
- Overseeing team compliance with work instructions, tools and systems, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and consistent reporting
- Monitoring a small portfolio of projects, maintaining oversight of progress against milestones and continuously reviewing the risk status
- Managing relevant sub-contractors to ensure appropriate delivery of the agreed activities
Portfolio management and analysis
- Leading on portfolio management within an appropriate risk- and impact-based framework, ensuring consistency of processes and data management across the team
- Leading on portfolio analysis and collection of relevant metrics to support activities around programme promotion, business intelligence, impact and evaluation
- Overseeing the maintenance of a case study pipeline for programme promotion, customer reporting and shared learning
Stakeholder engagement & comms
- Engaging with companies and researchers developing new therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices and digital health technologies to help navigate the NIHR and the UK wider ecosystem and support them generate evidence to translate their innovations into products suitable for adoption
- Overseeing engagement with SMEs, HEIs and NHS organisations, to facilitate portfolio diversification through attracting applications from various geographical areas, organisations and health categories
- Working with relevant stakeholders across the NIHR, including the research infrastructure, and externally to identify health priorities or areas of unmet clinical need with the aim of developing industry-focused offers
- Supporting or leading engagement with other funders and charities, the investment community, and other relevant stakeholders to build awareness of UK policies, priorities and strategic initiatives to build an informed support to industry
- Supporting and/or overseeing the delivery of communications and engagement activities or leading on elements thereof, including competition communications, newsletters and annual reports
- Planning and/or contribute to the delivery of key events, consultations and/or workshops
- Identifying and attending relevant conferences
- Representing the funding programme at meetings at a senior level and/or act as the lead interface for stakeholders, both internally and externally
Strategic initiatives
- Leading on strategic programme planning, including programme growth and expansion, through engagement and collaboration with relevant stakeholders
- Leading on and contributing to strategic papers, proposals and programme activities, furthering programme development in the context of the wider funding landscape
Staff management
- Direct line management of resources at different level of seniority and delegation of activities to the wider team
- Assisting with recruitment and conducting the annual performance and development review process with direct reports
- Mentoring and training of new and existing staff
- Championing equality, diversity and inclusion within the team and the organisation
Qualifications
- Excellent understanding of health and social care innovation ecosystem including product development (either therapeutics, diagnostics, medical devices or digital health technologies) and the translational research pathway
- Educated to MSc/PhD level in biomedical, health or engineering sciences
- Experience of working at senior level in research management, technology transfer environment, health tech accelerators, start-ups, and/or organisations supporting innovation
- Experience of working within multiple areas of the health, social care and life sciences sector including industry, academia and the NHS with proven experience in commercially focused projects
- Experience in managing diverse internal and external relationships, across multiple organisations
- Proven business acumen and ability to think and plan strategically
- Understanding of intellectual property and commercial aspects in relation to research commercialisation
- Excellent at building relationships, maintain existing and create new ones
- Excellent presentation and communications skills
- Ability to influence and negotiate across organisations
- Committed team player with experience in line management and staff development
- Organisational and prioritisation skills with the ability to plan and execute multiple complex projects
- Self-starter, result-oriented and critical thinker with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with an attitude to develop creative and practical solutions.

This is an office-based, hybrid role with an expectation for all employees to attend our offices a minimum of 4 days a month, usually worked as 1 day per week, and may increase, subject to team requirements.
