About us

At Essex County Council (ECC), we’re committed to taking robust action on climate change and significantly reducing carbon emissions. The Essex Climate Action Commission is an independent group with over 30 members including local councillors, academics, business people and young people which was set up to advise on these issues. The Commission published its plan for Essex in July last year. In response, ECC published its first climate action plan in November 2021 detailing a £200m investment over 4 years. Together we’re working with other local councils and public sector organisations, as well as with individuals, businesses and schools, to identify ways to mitigate the effects of climate change, improve air quality, reduce waste across Essex and increase the amount of green infrastructure and biodiversity. When it comes to tackling the climate emergency, Essex is full of ambition, and we’ll encourage you to be the same.

About the role

You will support the Climate Action Commission and work closely with with Councillors, senior leaders and expert teams across the council, to contribute to the development and delivery of ECC’s climate action plan. You’ll also foster partnership working with local and national government partners. We’ll look to you to provide support on climate issues to teams across the council, supporting them to develop their own in-service climate action plans and turn them into a pipeline of deliverable projects. This will include embedding climate targets into every kind of service delivery across ECC, and tracking progress on our £200m climate action plan. You will also lead on nurturing and growing ECC’s internl staff climate network, enabling them to develop new climate initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Experience of environmental project delivery or policy development in the public sector is essential. An exceptional communicator, you’ll be confident working with political leadership and senior leaders. A good grounding in national climate policy and legislation is essential. You’ll also bring broad understanding of low carbon buildings, energy, transport, waste, green infrastructure, water conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as wider sustainability measures. Experience of partnership working to achieve environmental objectives is essential, and you’ll know how to source and develop funding applications.
