Job description

The role includes leading on the relationship with Darlington Borough Council and other partners in the town’s Rail Heritage Quarter project & act as the Trust point of contact with Network Rail on site matters.

What will you be doing?

Key Responsibilities  

• Direct the delivery of the new DLW infrastructure in compliance with the Trust’s lease obligations, specifically the installation of track to link the Works building with the national rail network.
• Work with DBC to secure funding for the new turntable, to support 2025 celebrations of the Stockton & Darlington (S&D200) and guide installation.
• Together with the Chairman, act as the link to key RHQ stakeholders, in particular DBC.  
• Play a key role on the region’s Heritage Board planning and delivering the S&D200 anniversary celebrations in 2025.
• Develop the business plan and funding for the acquisition and installation of the track to support DLW and the 1861 Shed.
• Develop and deliver, through others, the delivery plan for the installation of the track set out in the Trust’s lease with DBC.
• Support DBC in the securing the funding and associated delivery of the turntable to support the RHQ.
• Liaise with the Trustees and the Marketing & Communications Director to ensure fundraising for the track project and updates to the Trust’s part in S&D 200 are maximised. 

Knowledge and Experience  A knowledge of project management, including delivering results through others, and experience of managing capital projects is essential. Formal qualifications would be desirable.

Experience of being a part of an organisation comprised mostly of volunteers and only a small number of permanent staff is important, in order to understand the modus operandi of the Trust.  An ability to carry out day-to-day tasks is essential, as the Trust currently employs very few permanent administrative staff. This applies not only to the knowledge and skills required but also the ability to donate the necessary time to the obligations of the role.  

Personal Attributes  An ability to work as part of a busy team is vital, as is the ability to self-motivate independently. Demonstrable leadership, networking and organisational abilities are crucial.   As part of a relatively small team of volunteer directors and paid employees, a willingness to identify and act upon any issues arising, is essential. 

Experience in tenders and bids, large scale fundraising and donor stewardship. 

What difference will you make?

Your input working with external stakeholders will be central to the success of the project creating the infrastructure around the engines and ensuring access to the railway network.
