New Court Surgery Job description POSITION: Practice Nurse/Treatment Room Nurse RESPONSIBLE TO: Lead Practice Nurse SUMMARY OF THE POSITION To provide clinical nursing service and support to other professionals and to patients of the practice including treatment, screening and advice within the professional competence of the post holder. Support and work effectively within the clinical team. All duties will be carried out in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and with regard to the various practice protocols. MAIN RESPONSIBILITES OF THE POSTPrinciple duties and areas of responsibility Clinical Nursing Practice Wound Management Undertake dressings Suture and clip removal Screening Undertake screening including: BP checks, height, and weight, BMI, Urinalysis, smoking status. Carry out New Patient checks Undertake venepuncture according to practice protocol Health Promotion: Make basic assessment of needs of patients Provide nutritional advice on - overweight - CHD - Diabetes Measures and records BMI Understand patients motivation to adapt their lifestyle Offers lifestyle advice on smoking and exercise and refers as appropriate Vaccinations and Immunisations Administer injections under an individualised prescription or Patient Group Directive. To continually update your knowledge of the implications of immunisation and contra indications Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs. Ear Care Advise patients about safe ear care Infection Control Support patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures. Apply infection control measures within the practice according to local and national guidelines. This includes: Universal hygiene precautions The collection and handling of laboratory specimens Segregation and disposal of waste materials Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries Dealing with blood and body fluid spillages Emergency Management To be competent in anaphylaxis and resuscitation techniques attend updates when required Child Health/Child Protection Recognise the signs, symptoms and categories of child abuse Understand the importance of recognition, observation, documentation and communication Be aware of child health procedures, statutory local procedures and points of referral Have knowledge of other practitioners and agencies roles Understand basic legal issues around child abuse. Attend updates when required. Womens Health Has a working knowledge of the national and local Cervical Cytology and mammography screening programmes Can discuss breast self awareness and provide supporting literature to patients Mens Health Can discuss and give basic advice on male health issues and provide supporting literature to patients, including testicular self examination Cardiovascular Disease Have a basic understanding of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system Identify and advise patients on risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease i.e. BP, lipid, glucose monitoring, family history, smoking, diet and exercise Understand the basic management of patients with hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction and cerebro-vascular accident Work within agreed protocols to empower patients to manage their own cardiovascular disease Make appropriate referral for review based on issues identified in patients management and needs. Clinical Practice Leadership Assist in clinical audit and the setting up and monitoring of standards of care. Assist and teach others in clinical setting, including unqualified staff Act as assessor/mentor to other staff where necessary Work effectively in the team. General Duties To control admissions to own case/session list, i.e. allow direct access by patients to consultation appointments To maintain accurate patient records on the computer To collect data and participate in regular practice audit and research projects when required To log and dispatch specimens to the hospital To assist the Practice Nurses in the provision of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management Education To maintain continuous professional development in keeping with the requirements of the practice. To participate in training of other personnel as appropriate, including unqualified staff. To contribute to the preparation of the Practice and Professional Development Plan. Organisational Controls: Re-enforce the Partnership ethos of providing a friendly, efficient and effective service throughout the practice. Preventing and detecting mistakes and eliminating any potential bad practice Monitor and improve the levels of services we provide our patients Communicate to the Practice Manager any concerns or difficulties that arise within the practice Security Controls Ensuring commitment to the protection of both physical assets and confidential information from alarms, passwords and information Ensuring that all activities are properly authorised and processed, checking entries on the computer are inputted correctly. Information and I.T. Facilitate good communication systems within the practice with the use of computerised messages. Extrapolate information received by outside agencies and bring to the notice of all clinicians wherever necessary. Undertake all training and attend any computer data input and retrieval meetings deemed necessary by the Practice Manager to manage the clinical system effectively. Patient Liaison Be available to deal with any patient query that may prove to beyond the ability of the medical receptionist, and be aware of limit of own ability. Ensuring that all formal complaints are passed onto the Practice Manager for immediate action Health and Safety Draw to the Practice Managers attention any preventative and protective measures deemed reasonable and implement if directed to do so. Refer to the Practice Nurses in the first instance when unsure of procedures and then to the GP. Monitor areas that may be failing and take appropriate action Identify appropriate sources for further information and advice Additional skills required for the post An ability to prioritise and balance routine administrative tasks against important management issues of the surgery Ability to contribute to future practice policies and growth Excellent communication skills written/verbal Use available resources effectively Make balanced and appropriate decisions Develop and Implement new ideas to improve performance Communicate effectively with the Doctors, Practice Manager, the team, colleagues and outside agencies Perform in a cost effective manner to eliminate waste and to help the organisation to run economically Working knowledge of clinical software Basic knowledge of computer hardware You will be expected to maintain your own annual registration with the NMC. You will also be expected to be conversant with the NMC code of Professional Conduct and understand the importance of professional accountability.
