About the role:

Horsham District Council is looking for a positive and enthusiastic Environmental Apprentice to join teams across the Council to inspire greener futures in our area. This is an ideal opportunity for a school leaver looking to start their career or someone who is looking to retrain or who has been out of the workplace for a period of time.

We have a key objective to inspire greener futures in our area. We employ a professionally qualified planners, ecologists, landscape architects, arboriculturists, climate change experts, and recycling operatives to help us achieve the many projects we run to improve the environment and the lives of our residents, and to slow climate change in whatever way we can.

You will work in five teams who support the Inspiring Greener Futures agenda, these include our climate change, recycling campaigns, specialist ecology, landscapes, and water neutrality teams. Once you have completed your first year you will help decide where your next placement takes place. You will discover whether your interest is practical, theoretical or procedural and take your career in the direction you choose.

During your apprenticeship you will work on campaigns to enhance the environment and with the public to help their understanding of how to lessen their impact on the environment. You will process applications for grants to help people change their lives or trade in environmental credits, you may help design schemes that will make the use of sustainable transport easier.

A senior officer will work with you to support you throughout the programme, therefore, you will be required to work in the office for a minimum of 2 days a week, however there is likely to be some be scope for some homeworking after the initial induction period and when there is work that can be done independently. You will receive support to help shape your career and learning and you will report to the Team Leader of each team you work in. You will also join our early careers network and have support and social times with other colleagues new to Local Government.

You will be fully supported to achieve the Level 6 Environmental Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship standard through a mix of classroom workshops and remote learning, with 20% of your working week dedicated to off-the-job learning, including attending classes at University one day a week (during term time). This will lead to the award of a BSc in Environmental Science over the five year period.

Towards the end of your apprenticeship, the Council will work with you and provide information, advice and guidance, to endeavour to help you find suitable employment at the end of your contract.

About you:

To succeed as an Environmental Apprentice, you will be hard working and have a passion for inspiring others to help save our planet. You will have local knowledge of Horsham District to make our towns, villages and countryside better for generations to come. You will have great customer service skills and an ability to collaborate and communicate with a range of people from different backgrounds.

You will have achieved or expect to receive, as a minimum, at least one of the following standards:

A-levels CCC (96 UCAS points).
BTEC Extended Diploma DMM-MMM.
International Baccalaureate - 26 points. With at least three subjects at Higher level.
Access to HE Diploma - Pass with 60 credits overall. Level 3 units in science required. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 18 credits at merit or above.
