Assistant Head of secondary – PASTORAL CARE                       

THE SCHOOL

The British School of Guangzhou is at the forefront of international education in China. Established in 2005 for students aged 1-18, our school is recognised for academic excellence leading to outstanding A-Level results and entry to top universities worldwide. We have two main campuses, BSG Nanhu (South Lake Campus) and BSG Olympic Park campus (Huangpu). The South Lake Campus is about 20-minute drive north of the city centre, enjoys picturesque views over Nanhu Lake and a golf course. All classrooms are attractively furnished, air-conditioned and equipped with WiFi and an interactive whiteboard or Smart TV. The school has impressive resources and facilities including music rooms, guided reading rooms, IT zones, science labs, a dance studio, sports gym, libraries, a theatre and two coffee shops for staff and parents. Outdoor facilities include three age-specific football pitches, a swimming pool, basketball courts, a well-equipped X-fit gym and an adventure playground. The Olympic Park campus is our new, purpose-built campus for Early Years and Primary students, located in the heart of Huangpu, this exciting Olympic Park building houses leading-edge facilities to support our collaborations with The Juilliard School and MIT — offering the very best performing arts and STEAM environments.

THE ROLE

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and experienced school leader to offer guidance and inspiration as part of the Secondary Senior Leadership Team. As key members of the team, you will play a major role in supporting the operation of the school as well as deciding on future academic direction. As an Assistant Headteacher you will lead on Pastoral Care within the Secondary School.  Along with the existing Assistant Headteachers, (Teaching, Learning & Assessment) (Head of Sixth Formm) (Student Enrichment and Experience) and the Head of Secondary, you will form the Secondary School Leadership Team (SSLT). A typical Assistant Head portfolio will include:

· Leading on a core learning area (e.g. assessment, pastoral care, professional development, performance management, etc)

· Line-management of several Subject and/or Year Leaders

· Oversight of several operational aspects (e.g. cover, duties, calendar, handbooks , etc)

· Input into common SSLT responsibilities (e.g. recruitment, induction, development planning, etc)

Candidates are encouraged to highlight any relevant experience as well as express any particular areas of interest.

There is a teaching commitment, which will be confirmed once the timetable is completed. Please clearly state which subject(s) you are able to teach, and to what level.

The successful applicant will be joining a team of enthusiastic teachers across both our Southlake and Olympic Park campuses’. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and hugely enthusiastic Middle Leader to step into Secondary Senior leadership to join our well-established school. You will be able to adapt quickly to our fast-paced international environment, you will possess a university degree, a recognised teaching qualification and considerable teaching experience. You will be expected to demonstrate thorough curriculum knowledge and a proactive approach towards the wellbeing of young children, yourself and others, including your own professional development.

2023 IGCSE RESULTS

The two main criteria that are used to judge examination performance for 16 year olds in the UK are; achieving 5 grades at 'C' or above, and the number of the highest grades achieved. We are very proud that 91% of all examinations sat by the British School of Guangzhou students received grade 'C' or above (9-5), and 49% achieved A* - A (9 – 7).

2023 A-LEVEL RESULTS

With a 99% pass rate, our A-Level results are testament to our academic success and commitment to building a lifelong love of learning. 53% of exams taken by our students achieved an 'A' or 'A*' grade. 74% achieved A*- B grades.

Our Class of 2023 secured places in a range of university destinations worldwide, with three students now attending Cambridge University studying Law, English and Economics. We also have students in US and Canadian universities, and in Universities in Dubai, Hong Kong and Germany, as well as UK.
