Job description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse leader to join the Haematology team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Lead Specialist Nurse.
The Department of Clinical Haematology is based in the Cancer and Haematology Centre on the Churchill Hospital site and offers a tertiary-level care for blood cancers and blood disorders to patients in Oxfordshire as well as being a hub for haematology referrals from the Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network (TVSCN).
The role will encompass a clinical component, anticipated to be a 40% clinical and 60% managerial/administrative split. It is acknowledged that changes in clinical service delivery may require flexibility in this split.
The individual will lead a team of professionals/practitioners, working closely with the medical, allied health professional and other clinical and non-clinical staff, to provide a high quality, effective, efficient and person-centred service. Leadership for service development, evaluation and quality improvement, and contributing to education and research, are expected as part of the role.

• Provide expert clinical care, exercising professional autonomy within their field of expertise.
• Co-lead a team of professionals/practitioners to provide a high quality, effective and efficient service.
• Work collaboratively with the Deputy Matron to develop the service, promoting excellent patient care through staff specialist skills development
• Work collaboratively with referring teams to the service, promoting the specialist service whilst supporting their development and learning.
• Participate in collaborative research programme
• Raise the profile of the service at local, national and international level
• To co-lead and consult on the development and evaluation of the service in conjunction with the wider multidisciplinary team
• Participate in the provision of specialist education and training programmes

Key Result Areas:
Clinical Practice:
• Provide expert care for patients/clients and their care givers using the post holder’s expertise.
• Have specialist knowledge of client group across a range of clinical issues, underpinned by the theory and practice acquired through study at Masters Level.
• Act as a role model of expert nursing practice in specific client area.
• Establish, Implement and monitor trust guidelines, policies and protocols with regards to specific client group.
• Make and accept referrals to and from other disciplines.
• Co-ordinate multi-disciplinary reviews and assessment
Leadership and Management:
• Exercise professional and clinical leadership skills to promote best practice
• Contributes to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/ guidelines/protocols relevant to specialist area and wider health care arena
• Contributes to the clinical governance process, including leading adverse incident reporting/investigation and management of complaints, where appropriate and relevant to their area of practice/expertise
Education and Training:
• To act as a visible ambassador for the Oxford Model for Exemplary Professional Practice Providing clinical expertise, evidence-based leadership, research and innovation.
• Role modelling life-long learning and relishing opportunities to share best practice.
• Ensure care and compassion is the culture for both patients and staff within your area.
Improving Quality and Developing Practice:
• Demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice and clinical excellence and lead staff in the implementation of such practice.
• Support and facilitate practice development, audit and project/research activity within the clinical speciality, contributing to the continuing improvement in service quality.
• Raise the profile of the Service at local, national and international level by contributing to professional and service debate, and through professional activity, publications and presentation at conferences.
