Introduction
Reporting directly into the Engineering Manager & Lead Mechanical Engineer, the Mechanical Engineer role is responsible for assisting the Lead Mechanical Engineer in providing engineering solutions that exceed both internal and external customer standards in the design and development of mechanical solutions within bespoke electrical power and control systems. This is done through the provision of design, CAD models, drawings, documentation and technical reports required to fulfil the design objectives consistent with the requirements and standards as set out in customer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Application of engineering knowledge and experience to drive Power Solutions mechanical design solutions to fruition.
- With minimal guidance from the Lead Mechanical Engineer, undertake project-specific mechanical solution assignments with responsibility for the overall integrity of design for power and control solutions to fulfil the required customer specifications.
- Work alongside the Project Manager and Lead Mechanical Engineer to ensure that your engineering activity is prioritised commensurate with project requirements.
- Team-working with engineers within the team, always available to provide advice and input to assist with technical solutions.
- Design and develop all solutions in line with customer requirements and in accordance with the latest company processes and procedures.
- Apply formal change control to CAD models, drawings and design documentation in accordance with the company’s Document Control and Configuration Management procedures in order to maintain design traceability.
- Perform all tasks in such a way as to maintain compliance with the company’s procedures.
- With guidance from the Lead Mechanical Engineer, be involved in the transition of projects from development to production.
- Maintain strong communications with other groups across the business so as to maintain a professional image and develop confidence in our engineering abilities.
- Assist the Lead Mechanical Engineer with the preparation of material and labour estimates for tasks as part of our bid process.
- Awareness of industry trends, and following continued professional development.
- Create solution concept drawings and transfer these to accurate CAD models or integrate them within existing CAD models
- Perform calculations and/or run dynamic models of designs in order to verify correct function prior to prototype manufacture.
Core Requirements
- At least a Higher National Diploma (and ideally a Degree) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Be eligible for security clearance to the required level.
- Awareness of concept development and requirements capture.
- Have a high level of self-motivation and an ability to work autonomously without high levels of supervision.
- Excellent Communication skills, able (and willing) to articulate ideas and plans clearly to personnel at all levels within the organisation.
- Established CAD Practitioner (copious experience in using Solidworks or similar CAD software).
- Demonstrable understanding of basic electrical principles including Earthing and Bonding.
Desireable Skills and Experience
- Have previous experience of working as a Mechanical Engineer in an engineering business.
- Have previous experience in designing mechanical solutions for power and control products detailed in the knowledge section.
- Experience of technical document preparation including part specifications, test strategies, procedures and reports.
- Experience of the product development lifecycle from ‘cradle to grave’.
- Good familiarity with standards associated with metals, fasteners conversion coatings and paint schemes (including modern Hexavalent Chromate-free versions).
- Demonstrable understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for sheet metal fabrication, welding, casting and machining processes.
- Awareness of 3D Printing processes.
- Understanding of ‘Design for Cooling optimisation’ best practice.
- Understanding of ‘Design for Vibration proofness’ best practice.
- Demonstrable understanding and experience of structural FEA.
- Demonstrable understanding and experience of thermal simulation/CFD.
- DOORS Requirements Capture/Tracking Tool Experience.
- Quality Engineering/Processes.
- Awareness of Environmental Qualification Standards such as MIL-STD-810H and/or DO160.
