Job description
Lead Bioengineer
About us:
Ace Aquatec is an award-winning aquaculture technology company specialising in welfare-first in-water electric stunners; marine mammal protection devices, biomass estimation and sea lice removal systems. We help customers thrive by making their operations efficient, ethical and sustainable.
About the role:
As Lead Bioengineer you will network and co-operate with leading scientists and academics in the field, as well as Ace Aquatec’s technical team, to understand and optimise the interaction of our technology with living aquatic creatures in ways that enhance animal welfare, sustainability and customer value. To enable this you will identify and pursue grant-funded R&D opportunities.
Reporting to the Head of Product, you will own the validation of Ace’s technology in its interaction with nature while working closely with the Sales team to ensure that activities align with customer and business priorities.
Recognised as an expert in your field, you will be a clear and confident communicator who enjoys explaining technology to customers, colleagues and investors of non-expert background.
What you'll be doing:
- Design experiments and validation tests relating to biological interactions with Ace equipment (stunning, deterrents etc). Based on these results determine key parameters and settings for equipment.
- Advise on animal welfare matters and ensure welfare standards are upheld during testing and throughout the lifetime of Ace products.
- Oversee all testing and validation activity relating to live animals and participate regularly in site tests. Work with the Validation Coordinator to maintain test plan matching business and customer needs.
- Disseminate key findings, knowledge and results to the wider Ace team and customers. Generate documentation and/or videos explaining concepts to a non-expert audience, while protecting IP and trade secrets.
- Liaise with the scientific community within aquaculture and animal welfare spheres. Build trusting relationships and act as an ambassador for Ace, contributing to academic papers and representing the company at conferences and academic events where applicable.
- Liaise with key aquaculture industry and third sector contacts, explaining and promoting Ace’s current technology, while gathering requirements and exploring opportunities for new technology.
- Identify opportunities for grant-funded scientific research aligned with Ace’s strategy. Plan and write grant applications, bringing together necessary project teams from industry and academia
- Regularly review relevant academic, scientific and industrial literature, identifying important trends, opportunities and threats. Compile a regular management summary.
- Work with Ace’s engineers and third parties on product development, feeding into concept generation and design for new equipment providing innovative customer solutions.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to the Validation Coordinator
What we're looking for (essential):
- Considerable experience and proficiency in scientific testing and analysis
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to explain concepts and results to lay audience
- Well-developed co-operation and networking ability
- Customer and business focused
- Willingness for regular national and international travel
What we're looking for (nice to have):
- Established presence and academic/industry contacts within aquaculture and/or animal welfare sectors
- Experience of scientific testing involving live animals
- Experience of successful grant writing and applications
- Relevant published academic work
We offer a range of exciting benefits including:
- 33 days annual leave
- Death in service at 4 x your annual salary
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Enhanced parental leave policies
- Birthday day off
- Paid bereavement leave
- Paid sick leave
