Knowledge Transfer Manager - Health (Medical Technologies)

Purpose of the Role

To deliver knowledge transfer and other activities aimed at stimulating innovations which are related to medical technologies and the wider health sector and which have potential to grow UK productivity and the UK economy.

This role would suit an individual with broad knowledge of medical technologies and the wider health sector, who understands the challenges faced by R&D-active companies as they develop and scale. 

Scope of the Role

The role will provide technical and knowledge transfer capability across the health sector, with particular emphasis on medical technologies. The role will support work across our priority themes of medical technologies, medicines and digital health & care; and our cross-cutting work including healthy ageing, precision medicine and microbiome / anti-microbial resistance / infectious disease. The role will deliver outputs to meet Innovate UK Business Connect's KPIs with particular attention to business interaction and stakeholder engagement.

The Health team is a multi-disciplinary team that works across the whole of the health sector. We are looking for an individual who complements our team, with a background in medical technologies. Experience in supporting early-stage commercial opportunities will be needed. Ideally, the individual will be interested in a wide range of health-related fields, will be able to spot potential opportunities and will also have an understanding of the UK health innovation ecosystem and market drivers. We are looking for a person who is a great communicator and networker, who feels comfortable communicating with a whole spectrum of people from business leaders through to scientists & engineers. The individual will have the ability to act as a signpost and champion for day-to-day activities and will understand the role that medical technologies can contribute to the UK economy.

The Health team is distributed across the UK, and whilst all Health team roles are national in scope, we also take advantage of our distributed nature to engage more closely with local & regional health innovation ecosystems. This enables us to support Innovate UK’s place-based interventions for the benefit of innovators from across the UK.

• To engage directly with businesses through making new connections and collaborations across the UK health innovation ecosystem, with a particular focus on medical technologies
• To develop and maintain links to key stakeholder organisations across the UK health innovation ecosystem
• To design, plan & deliver events & workshops, and to author reports & articles as relevant
• To lead on Innovate UK Business Connect initiatives such as Innovation Networks, Communities of Practice etc as needed and also to contribute to colleagues’ projects
• To actively contribute to cross-sector collaborations, through close working with other Innovate UK Business Connect teams
• To develop plans to stimulate innovation within the sector and at the interfaces between medical technologies and other sectors
• To demonstrate knowledge of gaps or challenges which affect the sector or companies and develop ideas for Innovate UK Business Connect interventions to address them
• To track outcomes resulting from Innovate UK Business Connect interventions, seeking case studies and metrics capture
• To contribute to Innovate UK Business Connect -wide internal communications, systems & projects, helping colleagues as required
• To support KPI delivery and provide regular reporting of activity and outcomes

Experience

• First degree or higher (or equivalent)
• Relevant industrial experience, including R&D and project management
• An understanding of the challenges faced in developing business opportunities in medical technology in particular and across the health sector generally
• Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement or experience in a customer-facing role 

Skills 

• Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, in order to maintain professional working relationships at all times and work positively and collaboratively with a range of colleagues from diverse backgrounds
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to evaluate alternative courses of action and formulate recommendations 
• Good critical information seeking skills and the ability to use the information obtained to reach the most appropriate decision 
• Excellent IT and presentational skills 
• Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills to ensure desired outcomes
• The ability to present a professional image of Innovate UK Business Connect at all times
• Organisation skills and project management
